The tumultuous old year has ended and we officially enter the year 2022, which is also a very special year for Sword Art Online.
2022 is the time when the movie Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of a Dark Dus is released, but that is not the focus of the article. The biggest connection between SAO and 2022 is the fact that the first part of the Sword Art Online series is timed this year. The year 2022 ushered in the May release of NerveGear after VR technology was developed to new heights. By August, the game Sword Art Online went into Closed beta before the game was fully launched in November of that year. Not long after the game’s launch, Kirito and 10,000 players were trapped inside Sword Art Online and had to find a way to survive inside the virtual world. More than 200 people died that day as well as opening up a nightmare for the remaining players.
In real life, although VR technology has also been quite developed in the past few years, it is still very far away to reach the level of Sword Art Online. Even so, we can’t deny that author Reki has a very good vision when it comes to the future development trend of technology.
Sword Art Online, commonly known as SAO, is a Japanese light novel series written by Reki Kawahara and illustrated by abec. The series is set in the near future of the arrival of the VRMMO world. The light novel series was published under the ASCII Media Works Dengeki Bunko label from April 10, 2009. An anime series produced by A-1 Pictures premiered in Japan from July to December 2012. An anime series A second season titled Sword Art Online II was released in July 2014. In the same year, the special episode “Sword Art Online: Extra Edition” was released. In 2017, the movie Sword Art Online: The Boundary of Illusion was released worldwide. An anime film adaptation of Sword Art Online: Progressive titled Sword Art Online Progressive: Hoshi Naki Yoru no Aria premiered on October 30, 2021 in Japan. The second film titled Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of a Dark Dusk is scheduled to premiere in 2022.
In 2022, the first Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (VRMMORPG), Sword Art Online (SAO), is released. Thanks to the Nerve Gear, a virtual reality helmet that can tap into the user’s five senses through their brain, players can experience and control their virtual in-game character with their mind.
On November 6, 2022, players logged in for the first time and discovered they couldn’t log out. They are then told by Kayaba Akihiko, the creator of SAO, that if they want to be free, they must reach the 100th floor of the game tower (Aincrad) and defeat the final boss. However, if their character dies in the game, they will also die in real life. The story follows Kirito, a high-level player determined to clear the game. When the game started two years ago, Kirito befriended a female player named Asuna and he fell in love with her. After Kirito discovered Kayaba’s identity in SAO, he confronted and defeated him in a duel, freeing himself and the other players from the game.
