The tragic past of the ancestor Ymir is recreated with many iconic images in episode 80 of Attack on Titan. Do you know the meaning behind?
Many fans of Attack on Titan have long realized that their favorite series have a lot in common with Norse Mythology. Isayama himself has confirmed that he was heavily inspired by Norse Mythology. And once again the iconic images of Norse Mythology are shown, this time in many scenes of the anime Attack on Titan episode 80.
1. World Tree – Yggdrasil
I hope this isn’t taken as a spoiler as I’ve only read a bit about this tree but it’s clear that the tree poor Ymir entered is either the same or the same Norse Mythology Yggdrasil. The ancestor Ymir himself is also named after the giant Ymir – the first creature of the universe. The three children Maria, Rose and Sheena also have certain correlations with Odin, Vili and Ve.
Yggdrasil, in Norse cosmology, is a vast sacred being that connects the Nine Worlds together. In Attack on Titan, Yggdrasil was also originally shown as a strangely large tree in the middle of the forest where Ymir inadvertently gained access to Titan’s powers. But since Ymir is stuck in Coordinates, the world tree Yggdrasil is visualized more strongly. Something shining brightly looked like a tree with its top branching off in many directions.
2. 9 Titan Shifter
As mentioned, Yggdrasil in Norse Mythology has roots connecting the nine worlds or the Nine Realms. One root goes to Múspellsheim, one to Niflheim, one to Vanaheimr (the land of the Vanir gods), one to Ásgard (the land of the Æsir gods), one to Midgard (the land of the sir gods), one to Midgard (the land of the gods of Æsir). of mankind). There are also the worlds Áflheim (land of light elves), Svartálfaheimr (land of dark elves), Nidavellir (world of dwarves), Jotunheim (land of giants).
Similarly, the Coordinate point is also associated with the 9 Titan Shifter. Ymir Fritz wanders here in the form of a little girl, often carrying a pail of water. We also see that she has the ability to create Titans or human bodies from mud. Ymir is responsible for the Titan’s ability to transform and regenerate, as she is the modeler of the Titan’s body whenever the powers of the 9 Titan Shifters are used.
On the other hand, the image of a 9-petal flower with Ymir’s blood stain on one petal continuously being zoomed in by the camera is not coincidental. In the scene where Ymir is chased through the forest and falls in front of a flower, we see the flower get into the middle of the frame for a few seconds and it’s completely on purpose. Could that be the author and director’s implication of the 9 Titan Shifter as we know it?
3. 13 years of a Titan Shifter’s life
The most famous iconic image of Ymir’s past in Attack on Titan is the image of 13 hands pointing towards her. In this scene, the author uses his hands to point at the girl Ymir forming a circle as an accusation. It is merely an accusation if we do not count the hands and suddenly realize the familiar number 13.
The 13 hands represent the remaining 13 short years of life that any human must receive when they have the power of 1 of the 9 Titans. In addition, Norse myths are also depicted extensively in the epic Edda, which was compiled around the 13th century from earlier folk sources.
The Story of the First Ancestor Ymir
It can be seen that Isayama’s deliberate placement shows viewers how ingenious he is in his ability to tell stories. There are many details throughout the series that are inspired by characters and events of Norse Mythology, but these are the three images highlighted in the 80th episode of Attack on Titan.
