Kodoani.com – Aniplex and ufotable confirmed in a video on Wednesday that their tentative theatrical anime project Katsugeki: Touken Ranbu still in production. Aniplex is streaming a new teaser video for the project online.
ufotable announced the film project in September 2017, coinciding with the final season of the television anime. The anime premiered in July 2017 and has aired for 13 episodes.
Aniplex of America describes the anime’s story:
In 1863 as the chaotic samurai era drew to a close, Japan was split between pro- and anti-shogunate factions. The fate of the world is at stake when an army of historical revisionists are sent from the future to change the course of history. To defeat these forces and protect true history, two sword warriors, souls earned by the Saniwa (sage), rush to Edo. The polite and attentive Horikawa Kunihiro and the hot-tempered but skillful Izuminokami Kanesada, who serve the same master, confront the invading army along with a group of other vibrant warriors including Mutsunokami Yoshiyuki, Yagen Toushirou, Tombokiri and Tsurumaru Kuninaga.
As the fate of history lies in the hands of these heroes, what meets the blade remains unexplored…
Toshiyuki Shirai (Fate/Zero, Tales of Zestiria the X animation director) directed the television series at ufotable. Mitsuru Obunai, Masaru Kimura and Masayuki Kunihiro are the sword fighting animators. Tatsuya Yamamura is in charge of historical research, and Kōgyoku Watanabe is the fencing supervisor. The show features eight character designers, each animating a different character.
The overall franchise based on the “personified sword training game” also includes a series of stage musicals, a series of stage plays, and two live-action films. Johren released the original Touken Ranbu browser game in English on April 27, and released the mobile version of the game on August 31.
The Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru spinoff series has two television anime series, a compilation anime, and an upcoming anime trilogy.
