Komi Can’t Communicate’s Nakanaka has a form of “chunibyo syndrome” that makes her fantasize about becoming a superhero, but is Tadano any different?
Kodoani.com – Komi Can’t Communicate continues to introduce unusual new friends to the socially anxious Shoko Komi. The newest member of the group, joining in Episode 5, is Omoharu Nakanaka, a girl who seems to believe she is a character from a fantasy anime. Nakanaka suffers from chunibyo, a Japanese term for teenagers who try to appear cool by living up to an imaginary personality. Episode 5 Explore some of the different forms of chunibyo, and who can and can’t continue from it.
Nakanaka bursts into Komi’s classroom, declaring himself “Marsault Les Primavera” and Komi as “Princess Komilia.” The on-screen narration contradicts her assertion with a message that reads, “Real name: Omoharu Nakanaka” confirming that her fantasies were indeed fantasy, and that the series did not suddenly switch to another genre. Hitohito Tadano, one of Komi’s earliest and best friends, recalls his similar habits from when he was a child, and Najimi Osana seriously informed Komi of Tadano’s embarrassing past. .
Nakanaka’s arrival reminds Najimi of Tadano’s junior high years, which prompts Najimi to share all the humiliating details with Komi. Tadano tries to protest against Najimi, but they push him out of the way. The unstoppable way that Najimi goes about their mission of embarrassing Tadano in front of Komi is especially funny because it’s so understandable. Nearly everyone has a friend willing to embarrass them like this, and Komi has moved on to the friendship stage, where she won the right to hear about Tadano’s humorous history. In Najimi’s flashback, Tadano has his hair pulled back, his jacket unbuttoned, and his sleeves rolled up. While Nakanaka fantasized about becoming a virtual super-miracle, Tadano dreamed of becoming a stereotypical Japanese gypsy.
During junior high, Tadano started doing “Operation L”, which literally means painting the word “LOVE” in English on a yard run to get the attention of his lover, Kawai. Kawai’s quick rejection of him caused him to immediately change his hairstyle and clothes, becoming the Tadano that audiences are familiar with. In episode 1, viewers learn that Tadano has been trying to become more normal to escape his chunibyo past, but the speed with which he performs this transformation is still shocking. It also suggests that Tadano’s delusions are not psychologically necessary for him to feel he can stand out in school, which may not necessarily be the case for Nakanaka. For her, eradicating illusions may not be so easy.
Nakanaka may have a lot in common with Tadano, but this time it is Komi who is helping her. In the classroom, Komi is curious about Nakanaka’s invented legend, which she clearly didn’t expect from the way she tried to figure out more details. Tadano explains her need for a “blood pact” that means she wants to be Komi’s friend, an interpretation supported by the way she nervously waits at the front door before introducing herself. . Then, in gym class, the students were asked to work together to perform stretching movements. Nakanaka appeared genuinely distressed to see the other students lined up in pairs, but quickly smirked and made a futile excuse: “If any ordinary soul touches the divine dragon power within me, the body will. Their bodies will melt to the ground.” However, her villainous laughter fades away. She is still delusional at first, but the fact that she’s still asking for a real reason why she wasn’t chosen shows on a whole new level she, like Tadano, admits the truth.
Komi back in time, silently offering to work with Nakanaka, who eventually accepted the offer. The fact that she did so as herself, unrelated to “Dragon Power” or blood pacts might not have frightened her new friend, but it could also have been due to Komi being unable to do so. Showing genuine friendship made Nakanaka feel at ease. This implies that her fantasies are some kind of coping mechanism. This is further supported by the fact that Nakanaka seems to rely more on her fantasies when she becomes nervous. Nakanaka stammered as he tried to thank Komi for working with him. When she was at a loss for words, she laughed wickedly and made up a new story about Komi as her “underling”. The narrator concludes that “Komi made a blood pact with Nakanaka,” ultimately satisfying Nakanka’s fantasy.
Nakanaka’s fantasy seems to be not only quite creative but also relatively harmless, especially compared to the more normal-seeing Ren Yamai, who kidnapped Tadano in Episode 4. However, the way Nakanaka tries to be straight more forthright when she’s with Komi, implying that there’s a part of her that just wants to be herself. Given the way Nakanaka struggles to express herself directly, stuttering when trying to thank her, perhaps her chunibyo also stems from social anxiety. With so many problems in common with both Tadano and Komi, Nakanaka would certainly be welcome to the group.
