Buggy is one of the last characters that One Piece fans expect to be a Yonko. So how did the guy manage?
Kodoani.com – Buggy clown is one of the first villains that Eiichiro Oda introduced in One Piece. First appearing in Orange Town, where Luffy meets Nami, he is revealed to be of great significance in the story. At the time, his threat was considered bigger than anything fans had seen. After all, he is known to possess the same legendary Devil Fruit powers as Luffy possesses, making him a worthy opponent for the Straw Hat Pirates. However, Buggy’s character is much more than that.
Buggy is revealed to have a connection with red-haired Shanks, the man who made Luffy a pirate. The two are known to have been on the same ship for a long time and Buggy has quite a bit of a grudge against his old sailor friend. It is clear that Buggy has been considered an important character and will also appear later, however, no one can predict how important he will continue in the series. Surprisingly, Buggy repeatedly failed and now became one of the Yonko – the four strongest pirates in the One Piece world.
Buggy’s development throughout the series
Buggy’s journey began long before Luffy started. He sailed as an apprentice with Shanks long ago on Gol D. Roger’s ship. Having spent quite a bit of time with Roger, he learned a lot about the Grand Line and even the New World quite early on. Although he never went to Laugh Tale with the crew, Buggy still made it all the way around the sea with Roger.
When Roger was executed, he shed tears, just like Shanks, however, he refused the latter’s request to join the crew, wanting to start a journey of his own. Buggy then camped in the weakest of the seas, the East Blue. There, he ruled with great power until finally being defeated by Luffy. However, he was about to enter the Grand Line again at this point, as evidenced by him holding a map of the sea. In the 100th chapter of One Piece, he sets out to the Grand Line, just like the Straw Hat Pirates.
Buggy’s time on the Grand Line had its ups and downs. He was soon captured by the Marines and sent to Impel Down. By a twist of fate, he found himself escaping at the same time Luffy broke into the prison. Teaming up with the guy, Buggy played a major role in staging the greatest prison break in the stronghold’s history and is well-deservedly credited for it.
During the Paramount War, his connection to people like Roger was finally revealed to the world. Buggy also plays an important role in the fight not because of his strength, but because of the number of people he gathers behind him. His men were even considered useful by the great Whitebeard, which says a lot. After his pedigree was finally revealed to the world, it’s no surprise that the World Government wanted him on their good side and offered him a Shichibukai.
For more than two years, Buggy enjoyed the position and was conducting trading in the underworld through his organization called Buggy’s Delivery. However, when the Shichibukai system was abolished, his luck seemed to have run out. At the end of Wano Country, fans amazingly revealed that Buggy had actually climbed even higher. Now, he holds Yonko’s place – the same rank as the likes of Shanks, Blackbeard and Luffy.
Why Buggy is a suitable Yonko
Yonko are often considered the four most powerful pirates at sea. Garp describes them as monsters that nest in the New World and rule it like Kings in a way that not even the World Government can resist. As such, only pirates of tremendous strength are usually considered for this position. Guys like Kaido, Big Mom, Shanks, and even Blackbeard would ideally be the right characters for the position.
However, somehow Buggy found his way into the complex, when Kaido and Big Mom fell. While this decision may seem like a strange one, it is certainly a very meaningful one. A Yonko must have quite a bit of pedigree and influence in the One Piece world and Buggy’s case is quite special. As a former member of the Roger Pirates, Buggy is considered to be one of the people who knows the secret of One Piece. At the same time, is considered the twin brother of the red-haired Shanks.
Furthermore, Buggy played a key role in the breakout in Impel Down two years ago and led some of the most vicious criminals to join him. As such, his strength is actually quite impressive. Over the course of two years, Buggy’s Delivery has seen countless strongmen allied with it, including the Giant Pirates as a part. His influence is widespread and he can also have quite a bit of territory under his name. This is further supported by the fact that Buggy is considered a living legend by the World Government itself, as seen when he was introduced as one of the Shichibukai.
Therefore, Buggy’s rise to Yonko’s position is not surprising. After all, he possesses power in the form of a very powerful organization that follows him and he wields great influence which he exerts through the numerous allies he has made in two years.
All that comes first is his connection to legends like Gol D.Roger and Shanks. While Buggy really doesn’t know where One Piece is or what it is, the World Government most likely doesn’t know about it. As such, for them, Buggy could be one of the greatest threats at sea that they cannot eliminate. To be fair, Buggy always fails but this also makes a lot of sense. Interestingly, Shanks once promised Buggy that the two would sail together to Laugh Tale to find One Piece. While that hasn’t materialized yet, it could be in the near future.
