A woman in Lamphun province, Thailand was ‘paid’ by a debt collector by using durian fruit to ‘assault’ her.
The Thai woman, identified as Duangduen, was parking her motorbike in front of Chang Rong Temple in Nai Mueng district to answer the phone when a stranger believed to be a ‘debt collector’ hit her in the face with a gun. durian peel.
The assailant is said to have fled the scene in a pickup truck, leaving Duangduen with his face ‘bloody’.
Duangduen has since appealed to local media for help after failing to see any progress in the lawsuit she filed at Mueng Lamphun Police Station following the incident.
She admitted to borrowing about 20,000 baht (nearly 13 million VND) from a moneylender last year to open a shop with a friend of hers. Due to financial difficulties, she said her interest payment has multiplied to a large number of 700,000 baht (equivalent to 445 million VND). Duangduen said the COVID-19 pandemic has affected their store’s income, leaving her unable to pay her debts. Her loan shark is said to have ‘traded’ the amount owed to debt collectors to ‘threat’ Duangduen and her friend. Debt collectors tricked them by saying that ‘borrowing more money’ would help them ‘clear’ the debt.
Duangduen’s friend is said to have fled because he was too scared and left Duangduen to deal with the consequences.
The heavily indebted woman has since contacted the relevant official government departments to get help. The lender agreed to suspend repayment but then showed up at her home to demand money and continued to threaten.
