The main character is the main focus presented and shown in a story or movie. And most of the main characters are good people. However, there are also main characters in anime/manga that are villains.
Here are six examples of anime/manga protagonists who feel more like the villain of the story.
1. Light Yagami – Death Note
This is a legendary example of an anime protagonist feeling like a villain in his own series. Initially, Light Yagami’s act of killing people with Death Note was probably still supported and justified by readers. But as time went on, he became a major threat. At the end of Death Note, Light may still be called the protagonist but the real heroes of the story are Near and the investigators.
2. Eren Yeager – Attack on Titan
Eren Yeager will remain one of the most popular controversial protagonists of the Attack On Titan anime. At first, everyone believed that Eren would be a hero and that the Titans were a terrible threat to humanity. However, Eren’s drive to achieve freedom then makes him a villain for the entire world, possibly leading to the total destruction of life beyond the island of Paradis if left unchecked.
3. Nine – Terror in Resonance
The character Nine from Terror in Resonance has a more understandable motive, and he doesn’t really want his bombs to kill people. However, he wants to realize his motives by masterminding the bombings in Japan. In the end, the damage these protagonists inflicted on Japan has been catastrophic, and it will take a long time for the country to recover from its effects.
4. Nana Hiiragi – Talentless Nana
Although this girl doesn’t appear to be a threat at first, Nana Hiiragi has been sent to kill the superpowered people at her school. Some of Nana’s victims were even good people, but unfortunately had to die. But will Nana, from the main antagonist as the villain, veer into a true hero as the story goes on?
5. Lelouch Lamperouge – Code Geass
Lelouch Lamperouge is both the main character and the main antagonist of the Code Geass animated series. Lelouch is a former prince of the Britannian Empire, later becoming the leader of the resistance movement to destroy the Britannian Empire that has been conquering various countries under his father’s control. However, Lelouch vi Britannia is also one of the most authoritarian princes in anime history. With his terrible power and ruthless, cruel methods, he finds every way to achieve his goal.
6. Tanya Degurechaff – Saga of Tanya the Evil
A dead businessman is reincarnated as “Entity X” into an orphan girl – Tanya Degurechaff in another world. According to entity X, if Tanya does not die normally or lacks faith, her soul will leave the cycle of reincarnation and be sent to hell for the crimes Tanya committed in her previous life.
In order to hide, Tanya decides to join the empire’s Mage Squad and join the war, hoping to gain a high score to live far from the front lines, and this way to reduce risk of being killed. Though he has the voice of a little girl, Tanya soon becomes an evil soldier who prioritizes her effectiveness and career above everything else, even the lives of her subordinates, especially especially those who made her angry.
