The original Angry Birds will be removed from Google Play due to its business “impact” on other mobile games from developer Rovio – the game’s creator. On the iPhone, Angry Birds will still exist, albeit under a new and easier to forget name: “Red’s First Flight”.
In a statement, Rovio said Angry Birds was simply too popular and players were willing to spend money on the game instead of downloading sequels or spin-offs from the same franchise. Rovio wrote on Twitter: “We’ve reviewed the business case of Rovio Classics: Angry Birds and due to the impact the game has had on our larger game portfolio, we’ve decided that Rovio Classics: Angry Birds will be leaving the Google Play Store from Thursday, February 23. Additionally, the game will be renamed Red’s First Flight on the App Store pending additional reviews. Phones can continue to use the app even after the game is removed from the store or renamed.
The Angry Birds creator also said: “We understand this is sad news for many of the fans and the team that have worked hard to make Angry Birds a reality. We are extremely grateful to the Angry fans. Birds have shown their love of the franchise and the game from the ground up. We hope fans can continue to bring their passion to current Angry Birds games like Angry Birds 2, Angry Birds, and Angry Birds. Friends and Angry Birds Journey, where our daily goal is to create the best possible experience for players.”
