The anime “Phoenix: Eden17” premiered globally on Disney+ on Wednesday. The anime follows a girl named Romi and her partner on their journey away from the ruined Earth and towards a new life on the planet Eden17. However, they discover that life has become extinct in this new world, making their lives even harsher. The anime is based on the “Nostalgia” arc of Osamu Tezuka’s main manga.
The story “Nostalgia” begins with George’s death in an accident, after he and Romi, his lover, began a new life on the planet Eden 71, while Romi was pregnant with George’s child. Romi decided to protect the planet and her child herself, constantly hiding from the world to have a child with George. She tried many times but could only have a son. After isolating herself, she woke up and found a rich town called Eden.
The film is directed by Shōjirō Nishimi, who has been involved in projects such as “Mutafukaz,” “Batman: Gotham Knight,” and “Ani-Kuri 15.” Katsunari Mano and Saku Konohana wrote the script, while Tatsuzou Nishida designed the characters and served as animation director. Shinji Kimura is the art director.
The film’s ending theme song is titled “Eien no Kizuna” (Eternal Bonds) and was performed by British boy band Libera.
