The trailer for the sequel begins with a new group of adventurers who are searching for the Golden City. The trailer introduces four new characters from the series: Vueko, Belaf, Wazukyan, and Faputa. The final scene of the trailer is a short clip of the film’s original trio of Riko, Reg, and Nanachi, who are enjoying a light break from their journey. The second installment will be titled Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun and is a direct sequel to the third film in the series, Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul. Studio Kinema Citrus (Rising of the Shield Hero, Barakamon) will once again handle the production of the anime series, which is currently scheduled for a 2022 premiere.
The story follows Riko, an orphan girl who lives in a town built around a giant, mysterious hole known as The Abyss. The enormous abyss attracts many explorers, known as Delvers, who explore the depths of The Abyss in hopes of finding artifacts and treasures left by an ancient civilization. After receiving a letter from her mother, who disappeared in The Abyss many years earlier and is presumed dead, Riko embarks on a journey to the bottom of the Abyss and finds her family.
Original manga Made in Abyss was created by Tsukushi Akihito and was originally published in Takeshobo’s Web Comic Gamma. It was later adapted into a 13-episode anime in 2017, followed by two compilation films recounting the events of the series in 2019, and an all-new sequel film to be released in 2020. . .
The first part of Made in Abyss available to stream on Netflix, Prime Video, and HiDive. The three theatrical releases in the anime series, Made in Abyss: Journey’s Dawn, Made in Abyss: Wandering Twilight, and Made in Abyss the Movie: Dawn of the Deep Soul are also only available on HiDive.
