Shiozaki’s original Ikki Tousen manga revolves around Hakufu Sonsaku, a high school student who possesses a mage that allows her to control the spirit of the warrior Sun Ce from China’s Three Kingdoms period. She battles students from other high schools, each carrying their own mage and embodying a different hero from the times.
Shiozaki launched Shin Ikki Tousen in Shonengahosha’s Young King Ours magazine in November 2015. A spin-off, Shin Ikki Tousen Gaiden, debuted in Shonengahosha’s Young King BULL magazine in 2018.
Shiozaki created the Ikki Tousen manga in the monthly Comic Gum magazine in 2000, and serialized it in the magazine until the magazine’s suspension in May 2015. Shiozaki then resumed serializing the manga in Monthly Gum Comic, which was renamed WEB Comic Gum, until August 2015. Tokyopop held the license for Shiozaki’s original manga in North America as Battle Vixens until the company closed its North American publishing arm in 2011.
The manga has inspired four television anime and five previous OVAs. Ikki Tousen: Western Wolves is the latest anime in the series, and the anime was released on Blu-ray and DVD in February 2019. The three episodes of the anime also aired on AT-X from January to March 2019. .
