Originally created as a collaboration between toy maker Takara Tomy and the Japan Railways Corporation, the Shinkalion franchise features mechanical conversions based on real-life Japanese bullet trains. In the Shinkalion Z series, Japan is attacked by giant monsters controlled by the evil Kitoralzers. A group of young pilots defend the country from this threat using the Shinkalions, giant cyborgs who are peacekeepers for the train created by the Shinkansen Ultra Evolution Institute.
This isn’t the first time Evangelion and Japan’s public transport have teamed up. Back in 2015, Japan Rail West launched a Neon Genesis Evangelion themed bullet train to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the highly influential anime series. The Eva ship -themed served for a limited time, from November 17 to May 2017.
Although over 25 years old, Neon Genesis Evangelion is still extremely popular to this day. The fourth and final film in the Rebuild of Evangelion series, Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, was released in Japan on March 8 and internationally on August 13 via Amazon Prime Video.
Shinkalion Z’s cross over episode will air in Japan on September 17. Currently, the series has not been licensed for international release and is not available on any streaming services outside of Japan.
