The Avalanche Studios Group behind the Just Cause series is working on a new roguelike fantasy game called Ravenbound: Tales of Avalt.
Avalanche Studios Group is the developer behind games like Rage 2 and the Just Cause series, whose name sounds a lot like Avalanche Software, the developer behind the upcoming Hogwarts Legacy. Avalanche Studios Group is known for making great and exciting games, yet their products are often underestimated.
It is reported that Avalanche Studios Group is currently developing multiple games, including the fifth game in the studio’s most popular Just Cause series and an open world co-op game with Xbox Game Studios called Contraband . However as revealed in a recent leak, Avalanche Studios Group is said to be working on another game codenamed “Jackdaw”. The real name of the game has been revealed to be Ravenbound: Tales of Avalt, and it will be a brand new IP for the studio in a new genre. The fantasy title will be in the roguelike genre, which is a growing game style following the recent popular successes of other roguelike titles such as Hades and Returnal.
The game’s development was leaked by Shawn Weber on Twitter, along with quite a bit of information about the game itself. It is known that the game will be set in a medieval fantasy land called Avalt and the player will have the task of protecting it from invaders. Players will choose to play as one of three characters known as Vessels of the Raven, each with different stats and weapons that the player can customize using attribute cards.
This roguelike game will rely on the mechanics of constantly re-using a certain amount of resources, and enemy types will be procedurally reformed each time the player is killed. Some other roguelike games have had to omit the story mode entirely due to this mechanic, but games like 2021’s Returnal have managed to integrate this element into their compelling storylines. Whether Ravenbound: Tales of Avalt will have a story campaign or will it just be a constant pursuit of combat is yet to be revealed, but Shawn Weber has described the game as an open-world Dead Cells. Dead Cells is a game that focuses more on combat mechanics than on its plot.
Another leaked detail about Ravenbound: Tales of Avalt is that it will include a feature that allows players to view the world from the perspective of a flying crow, similar to the feature introduced in Assassin’s Creed Origins. The game is said to include loot box mechanics, a system currently hated by many gamers, with some celebrities even saying loot boxes are illegal. However, we still don’t know if Ravenbound: Tales of Avalt will push these mechanics to a pay-to-win level.
