Whenever Bleach fans hear the name “Kenpachi”, they will probably immediately think of Team 11 Captain with a fighting prowess that anyone would fear.
Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto founded Gotei 13 a long time ago. For each division, he would need to find a strong warrior to lead, and whoever represented the 11th Division would receive an extremely noble title called Kenpachi.
Kenpachi is a title unique to each generation as only one person possesses it. If someone kills them in battle, this Kenpachi title will be transferred to the person who defeated the previous title holder.
The 11th Division has had many Kenpachi winners over the course of a millennium. Only five people have appeared in the series. Three of them appear in the manga and two appear in the novel, namely:
First Kenpachi : Yachiru Unohana
Kenpachi from Monday to Friday : Unknown
7th Kenpachi : Kenpachi Kuruyashiki
8th Kenpachi : Kenpachi Azahiro
9th Kenpachi : Unknown
10th Kenpachi : Kenpachi Kiganjo
11th Kenpachi : Kenpachi Zaraki
Currently, Zaraki is the owner of the Kenpachi title and is also the only Team 11 Captain still alive, as the rest of the members have passed away.
The history of the name Kenpachi is covered in quite detail in Bleach Thousand Year Blood War. Retsu Unohana, aka Yachiru Unohana, was the first person to possess this prestigious Kenpachi title.

She also clashed with Zaraki in her youth. It was an extremely tense match and had to be temporarily postponed until the next reunion in Bleach Thousand Year Blood War. When that rematch actually happened, Zaraki was forced to kill her to become the strongest Kenpachi. It wasn’t until then that Zaraki Kenpachi learned his Zanpakuto’s name so he could access the Shikai and Bankai powers that were previously ignored.
