Oricon just announced the total number of manga sold in 2023, and surprisingly, Blue Lock topped the list with a huge profit margin. This is huge news for the manga community because this is the first time a sports manga has topped the list of best-selling manga of the year.
Blue Lock has been really successful over the years and it could be due to the huge success of the anime that was released in October 2022. The anime has really attracted a lot of viewers to the manga and I am also one of family number.
Well, I’m not saying this is the best sports manga of the moment, but Blue Lock does something that we don’t usually see in the sports genre. Most sports manga/anime have the concept of friendship and love, while Blue Lock says “I will do what I want”.
Oricon annual sales rankings 2023
Starting at number ten, we have the Kingdom, with over 3,207,691 copies on sale in 2023. Honestly, Kingdom has been a really great year. The battle between Riboku and Akou’s army was truly crazy.
9. Tokyo Avengers
Even after ending publication on November 16, 2022, Tokyo Revengers still managed to earn ninth place on the bestseller list with over 3,218,117 copies sold. It even came in second place on the 2022 list,
8. My Hero Academia
In eighth place, we have My Hero Academia, with over 3,528,423 copies on sale 2023. My Hero Academia really impressed this year with its final installment against One for All and Shigaraki. We even bring Bakugo back into the story.
7. Spy × Family
Spy x Family claims the seventh spot on the list, with over 4,326,425 copies sold during the year. What’s surprising is that Spy x Family only released two episodes this year, one in April 2023 and one in October 2023.
6. Hit the ball
With more 4,968,484 copies goes on sale in 2023, Slam Dunk claims sixth place on the best-selling manga list. What’s shocking is that Slam Dunk hasn’t even released any new volumes this year, 2023. All of the revenue comes from manga released in previous years.
5. Chainsaw man
In fifth place we have Chainsaw Man, with over 5,348,618 copies on sale this year. Chainsaw Man released three volumes in 2023, helping it make the top 5 list.

2. Kaisen Jiu-Jitsu
Jujutsu Kaisen earned the second spot on the list, with over 8,541,411 copies sold in four volumes. This year’s Jujutsu Kaisen really impressed with the match between Gojo and Sukuna; However, it is also sad with that.
1. Blue buckle
And ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner in the best-selling manga of 2023, Blue Lock. Blue Lock is sold out 10,527,146 copies and only released four volumes this year. As I said before, this is the first time a sports manga has taken the top spot.
Even manga like Slam Dunk, Ao Ashi and Haikyuu haven’t done this in the past 20 years. Fun fact: One Piece had a 12-year streak of being the best-selling manga from 2007 to 2018, and Demon Slayer was the one to break that streak in 2019 & 2020.
Jujutsu Kaisen was the best-selling manga of 2021 & 2022, and now we have Blue Lock in 2023. So let’s see if Blue Lock can maintain its top position.
