It is not easy for an actor of Vietnamese origin to develop himself in Hollywood. Besides names like Ngo Thanh Van, Kelly Marie Tran… there are still many actors who have difficulty to have a sustainable career in acting. In the past, there was a Vietnamese-born actress who lost the opportunity to shine in a Disney project, but luck still smiled at her later.
Born in 1979, Hong Chau had an extremely difficult start as an actor in the US market. She debuted in 2006 through some obscure TV projects, which did nothing to boost her fame. Hong Chau spent more than 10 years “struggling” in the entertainment industry, taking advantage of his acting skills.

By 2017, success began to come to Hong Chau when the actress played a supporting role in the movie Big Little Lies with Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon. In the same year, Hong Chau participated in the TV project Downsizing and co-starred with actor Matt Damon. This unique and interesting character and the way he speaks English “mixed” with a Vietnamese accent have helped Hong Chau be nominated for many major awards, including the Golden Globe. Although not winning, but since then, the name Hong Chau began to be widely noticed.

After Downsizing, Hong Chau received more “heavy” invitations, including Disney. In 2020, the actress participates in the Artemis Fowl project, in which Disney integrates many Vietnamese street images. Hong Chau had a scene in the role of Opal Koboi, but it was cut in theaters and only the voiceover was kept. She was not even named in the credits at the end of the movie. Fortunately, Hong Chau’s film scene was kept in the movie version shown on the online platform.

After the ups and downs with Disney, Hong Chau continued to participate in a series of new but more academic titles. The projects she participated in were honored to participate in major film festivals such as Cannes, Venice … Most especially, The Whale – the film marking the return of action actor Brendan Fraser, in which Hong Chau as the male lead’s best friend and personal nurse. Or besides, there is The Menu – a “black comedy” masterpiece that brings together top stars including Anya Taylor-Joy, Nicholas Hault, Ralph Fiennes…
