2K announced Borderlands 3 will finally support crossplay with PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, nearly a year after the first addition of crossplay.
PlayStation has historically had a close relationship with cross-play between titles, with Sony’s flagship consoles often failing to allow PlayStation users to play with their friends on other platforms. Previous releases have seen popular games like Gang Beasts release without crossplay, and Epic Games has even previously confirmed that Fortnite developers have been asked to pay compensation to Sony for allowing their game to be cross-playable on PS4 and PS5. Among the games most notable is Borderlands 3 in a move that Gearbox Software is currently looking to fix.
The release of Borderlands 3 received critical acclaim following its highly anticipated September 2019 release date. The latest Borderlands game is the first in the popular shooter series in five years. after Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. However, crossplay didn’t come to Borderlands 3 for years after its release, the title only added crossplay last year, and the PlayStation console was dropped from the list. Now, with Borderlands spinoff Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands confirmed to support crossplay at launch, Gearbox recently announced that Borderlands 3 will finally get PlayStation crossplay support in the near future.
The announcement from publisher 2K Games comes just days after Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands was confirmed to feature cross-play and marks a change from last year’s Borderlands 3 situation. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford reported last year that the developer was “requested to remove cross-play support” for the PlayStation console from Borderlands 3 last year. While 2K hasn’t settled the controversy or given an exact release date, the publisher has confirmed that Borderlands 3 players on PlayStation will soon be able to team up with friends on other platforms.
The introduction of PlayStation crossover for Borderlands 3 comes as Gearbox’s focus has largely shifted to Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands with the game’s release date less than two weeks away. As a spin-off based on Borderlands 2’s popular RPG themed expansion – Assault on Dragon Keep, the game adds some new mechanics like magic and other features to the classic Borderlands orientation while still keeping the brand’s traditional shooting formula.
While Borderlands 3’s attention span for Gearbox is over, the game continues to receive regular support from the developer. In addition to the series of expansion packs that have been standard in the franchise since the first Borderlands installment, Borderlands 3 also sees regular seasonal events throughout its life cycle that reward players with weapons , new items and more to complete a variety of challenges.
