In Boruto’s Chapter #59, Sumire’s curious nature and interest in Kawaki and Boruto inadvertently reveal Konoha’s newest traitor.
Recently, Sumire has received more attention in the Boruto manga following the invasion and death of Isshiki Ōtsutsuki. She officially became Amado’s assistant when the traitor Kara worked with Konoha’s science team to find a way to remove Boruto’s Karma sign, preventing the boy from becoming Momoshiki in the near future. And, of course, she was personally interested in the role because of her crush on Naruto’s son.
But by Chapter #59, Sumire’s importance grows exponentially as she reveals Konoha’s newest traitor – Amado herself.
In this chapter, Sumire was surprised when Amado talked privately with Kawaki about getting karma back. That way, he could access Ōtsutsuki’s power without having to worry about his soul being the vessel. She knows it’s a conversation that should be with Naruto, Shikamaru or even with Katasuke. However, Amado presented Kawaki with a dangerous decision to make alone, and worse: to force him to accept it after knowing the danger it could pose.
When Kawaki left, angry with Amado for basically calling him a power-hungry brat, Sumire then rethinks Amado. She couldn’t believe he would do such an irresponsible thing, it was clear that she was observing his behavior since Kawaki’s return, injured after his battle with Isshiki. Although he seemed interested in the information, it was from a selfish point of view, making it seem more like a weapon than a person. Furthermore, she opposes Amado’s manipulation of Kawaki by telling him that this is the only way to stop Code and save his father’s savior, Naruto.
Amado scoffed in response, asking her if she was Shikamaru’s spy. However, Sumire was not intimidated, resisting the insults and making it clear that she was there in her own way to take care of Konoha’s best interests. The exchange then heated up when Amado insulted her intelligence and told her that she should play the long trick and stay silent to get more information from him.
Amado also has a point. He’ll know a thing or two about strategy as he served as Isshiki’s chief scientist before going against Kara by teaming up with Koji Kashin. Sumire asks what he’s plotting and he calls her “stupid”, making it clear that he has a very shady ending up his sleeve. Chapter #59 ends there, leaving the reader wondering what Amado’s plan was and whether he would kill Sumire to silence her.
Going public about her betrayal in front of Sumire raises more questions, while the way she berates when she confronts him for her lack of warmth and care, as well as a lack of coordination, confirms that he thinks she’s just a plan saboteur. Sadly, it seems that Amado succeeded in planting the seeds in Kawaki, which could have caused him to be exposed in the Boruto series.
