During its run, the Chihayafuru manga won the Manga Taisho and the Kodansha Manga Awards and is estimated to have more than 27 million copies in circulation. In 2011, the series was adapted into an anime by studio MADHOUSE, 25 episodes long. The second season followed in 2013, while the third season aired throughout the Fall 2019 and Winter 2020 anime seasons.
