Eternals: The Immortal Race is perhaps the most anticipated and anticipated blockbuster of the Marvel family in 2021. Not only gathers a huge star cast including Angelina Jolie, Kit Harington, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani…, Eternals is also directed by director Chloe Zhao – who just won an Oscar for the excellent film Nomadland. Therefore, fans are looking forward to a novelty that this director will bring to the Marvel blockbuster.
Unfortunately, Eternals did not receive the expected results. Released in early November, the film currently holds the title of work from Marvel Studios receiving the lowest score on film critic sites. Eternals received only 60% positive reviews from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. There are 47/118 reviews giving negative reviews about the movie. This ratio causes Eternals’ score to drop to 6/10, being labeled a “boot tomato”. The same situation occurs on Metacritic. Critics’ score for Eternals only stands at 55/100. Specifically, out of 33 writers giving comments, there were 15 positive comments, 16 neutral and 2 negative comments.
Yesterday, January 4, Eternals director Chloe Zhao expressed his thoughts on the negative reviews from critics about the film. The female director posted a screenshot of an article on Rotten Tomatoes about Eternals that reads: “Does Chloe Zhao’s epic superhero work Eternals deserve to be ranked last on the MCU movie rankings?”.
Sharing with a photo of Chloe Zhao opens with the question “Is it really worth it?”. Next, the female director wrote, “If you’re not sure, feel free to join the fun debate.” Finally, she informed readers Eternals was about to release on the Disney+ streaming service. In the return, Eternals has more new content such as comments by director Chloe Zhao himself or side clips.
Eternals is the latest Marvel superhero movie that weaves between the past and the present. In addition to the fighting scenes, the film recreates the scene of the group visiting each superhero who is living with ordinary people around the world. In the film, Gemma Chan’s character Sersi has travels around the world. She tries to contact the members of the group, bringing them together to face the threat of their old enemy – the race of The Deviants.
One of the main reasons why the film was badly criticized was that the film was too “greedy” when it brought many details related to the multi-ethnicity and LGBT community into the film. A few details can be supported, but when there are too many, Eternals becomes overwhelming, even becoming a crisis because of “exaggeration”. In addition, the fact that there are too many characters makes it difficult for the audience to focus on each individual’s plot, making the direction of the film ambiguous and confusing. This is also one of the controversial topics on global movie-loving forums.
