The horror film from Malaysia exploits a more terrifying perspective of talismans when turning humans into bloodthirsty monsters.
The movie series about charms and demons is no longer strange to the audience through a series of works stretching from Asia to Europe. However, victims of demonic possession often suffer the consequences alone or even with only a few loved ones. But in the Reincarnation Curse (original title: Rasuk) from Malaysia, the curse turns people into bloodthirsty demons and spreads diseases like zombies.
The content of the Reincarnation Curse begins when teacher Nazmi (Alif Satar) returns to manage the boys’ dormitory after a family incident. Because it was a holiday, many students went back to their hometowns and only 27 remained. However, Nazmi did not know that a group of students including Aldi (Ikmal Amry), Wari (Abbas Mahmood), Farid (Taufiq Hanafi), Sam (Syazwan Razak) and Kechik (Ayie Elham) had fled to the nearby forest to play. .
During the trip, Wari saw strange charm drawings on trees and rocks. He also accidentally broke a vase containing a strange black object. After returning to the dormitory, Wari suddenly transforms into a bloodthirsty demon with scary black eyes. Anyone bitten by him will turn into a zombie under the devil’s command. The dormitory suddenly turns into a nightmare when Nazmi and a group of students must find a way to survive.
Malaysia’s new zombie image
So far, zombie pandemics are often caused by viruses or chemical contamination. The Reincarnation Curse is a rare film that exploits the image of a zombie from a charm. Thanks to that, the work also becomes more unique and scary many times. Zombie in the Reincarnation Curse has a haunting shape with dark eyes, cracked face and sharp teeth, always full of black blood.
They not only possess high speed and strength, but also have more madness than other types of zombies. Not only that, this herd of zombies also has sharp senses and the ability to communicate separately to hunt down the same prey. They are all controlled under the power of the devil, so they are almost invulnerable to damage.
Each zombie bite will also transmit the curse to the victim. They will suffer both physical and mental pain when they constantly hear the sound of spells from the devil in their heads. Illusions of the past, pain or regret suddenly turned into a terrible nightmare, causing the victim to gradually submit and reincarnated as a monster under Wari’s command.
Proper horror elements
Thanks to the unique zombie image, director James Lee entertained the audience with dramatic chases and bloody bites. No character is completely safe from disaster. The film is not less shocking when anyone can become bait under the teeth of zombies. The bloody scenes made “to the wharf” show the brutality of the evil curse.
The context of the Reincarnation Curse also plays a big part in the horror element. Because of the power outage, the dormitory was in the dark. The familiar corridors and classrooms now become a horror when the undead can suddenly appear at any time. Many scenes make the audience hold their breath when the characters are only a few steps away from a tragic death.
The film clearly shows the suffocation, deadlock and fear that a group of students have to face when death is everywhere. Each of their steps must be carefully calculated and careful to the smallest action if they do not want to be prey for the devil. The plus point of the movie also lies in the fact that the action characters are not “lack of salt” but sometimes still can’t fight the overwhelming number of zombies.
In addition to the excellent horror part, director James Lee cleverly integrates meaningful lessons in the film. Aldi, Wari, Kechik or Sam were originally close friends. But in the face of life and death, there are people who are willing to sacrifice for their friends, but there are also cowards who choose to run away and leave everything behind.
Even though he has just gone through an incident, Mr. Nazmi still protects the students to the end. The cast from Malaysia including Alif Satar, Ikmal Amry, Abbas Mahmood, Taufiq Hanafi, Syazwan Razak, Ayie Elham, Alicia Amin or Elisya Sandha had an impressive performance and left the audience with many emotions.
In general, The Reincarnation Curse is a fascinating and novel horror film with many scenes that make viewers hold their breath or haunt for a long time after stepping out of the screening room. The film is currently showing in theaters nationwide.
