Kodoani.com – The following article contains spoilers for Episode 2 of The Dawn of the Witch.
The main characters in Dawn of the Witch Saybil, Hort and Loux Krystas take us back to the world of Grimoire of Zero with a new adventure and more mysterious origins to uncover. Set 10 years after the events of the original series, both Saybil and Hort are students at the Magic Academy, run by the founder and headmaster of Albus School. In the original series, she was friends with a legitimate witch named Zero.
In episode 1, Saybil was visited by a mysterious woman who noticed something strange in his eyes, causing her to steal his memories. For the next three years, Saybil struggled with expressing emotions and especially with a lack of motivation. This causes Saybil to do poorly at school to the point of being summoned to Albus’s office with a new proposal: she wants Saybil to become a mage of a new town for witches as a way to grow. his magic skills. If after three years this plan fails, she will erase the guy’s memories of school and magic.
On his way to the new town, Saybil is escorted by Albus’ old friend Loux Krystas, who is both the famous Wizard of Dawn and instructor at the School of Magic. He is accompanied by Hort, who is also a student of the School of Magic, but unlike Saybil, she is considered one of the school’s best performing students. At some point in their journey, Saybil and Hort are left behind for unknown reasons by Loux Krystas, and the two students venture out on their own. They encounter the tail of their classmate Beastfallen Kudo, who has been ambushed by a dangerous enemy named Tyrant – the ruins of the Church known as Dia Ignis.
In the past, the members of Dia Ignis were violent witch hunters, killing witches on the spot. Hort knows a lot about this history because as a child she witnessed the brutal murder of her best friend by Tyrant. Interestingly, Hort is harboring a dark secret of her own: she is actually the daughter of a demon, as hinted by her protruding antlers. Some time later, Hort was recruited by Dia Ignis to infiltrate the Albus School of Magic to spy on the students and staff and pass on their secrets to the Church. Neither Albus nor Loux Krystas seem to be aware of this fact, and Saybil certainly is unaware of it.
While tracking down their classmate Kudo, Hort and Saybil encounter Tyrant, who smashed Kudo’s arm and plans to send him back to be tortured and tested by the Church. Sadly this is not the first time this has happened to Kudo. However, the worst surprise for Beastfallen was Tyrant’s hand in hand with his classmate Hort as a spy, forcing the latter to come clean.
Hort confesses her true origins to Kudo and Saybil, and in fact confirms that she enrolled at the School of Magic as a spy. Her antlers were even amputated as part of her undercover work for the Church. Hort also revealed her inner conflict with her role, saying that she didn’t feel good about betraying Albus and her classmates, because she fell in love with them. In particular, Albus offered her a job after graduation, which made Hort feel even worse about her role as a spy.
Saybil is quick to forgive Hort, but Tyrant fails to do so and threatens the lives of all three Magic Students. His attack was only halted by the timely arrival of Loux Krystas. Unfortunately for the Dawn Witch, Tyrant gained the upper hand, and was forced to use his mighty Scepter in exchange for the students’ lives. Tyrant asked Saybil to pick up the staff, although in an ironic situation the staff’s sentient powers reacted to his mysterious power. This allows Saybil to use Ludens’ Scepter against the Tyrant and remove him as a threat without committing suicide.
Despite successfully defeating the Tyrant, Loux Krystas notes that Saybil’s power must exceed her staff if he is to be able to touch it without dying. As she herself notes, the Scepter of Ludens can only be handled by members of the Krystas ancestry. This hints at a darker origin for Saybil: either he is a much bigger threat to the School of Magic than was initially thought – which would explain why his memories are corrupted. delete – or he himself is a member of the Loux Krystas lineage. Whatever turns out to be the case will most likely be revealed as the series progresses.
