A crying and laughing situation has just been shared by Korean media. A middle-aged Korean woman was just scammed out of $51,000 (more than 1 billion VND) because she believed she was dating Elon Musk.
The incident started when this woman received a friend request from an account named “Elon Musk” on Instagram. “What I experienced was like a dream. I'm really a big fan of Elon Musk,” the woman shared. Of course, the person who befriended the victim was not the real Elon Musk. This is just a fake account, created by scammers to scam money from unsuspecting women.
The crooks gained the victim's trust from fake photos, collaged passports, and even fake video calls (all performed by deepfake technology). After a period of chatting and flirting, the Korean woman was convinced that this was Elon Musk and that she was about to change her life thanks to catching the eye of the second richest billionaire in the world.
After that, the victim was suggested by the scammer about a highly profitable investment. Without any doubt, the middle-aged woman immediately transferred the subject 70 million won (nearly 51,000 USD). Of course, there aren't any beautiful love affairs or life-changing dreams here. The thief disappeared immediately after receiving the money.
According to Korean media, incidents like this are not rare. In 2023, the number of people reporting being scammed for love online has increased dramatically. Victims are both male and female, often middle-aged, with good economic conditions but lacking emotions.
