Dragon Ball Super manga artist Toyotarou recently explained the process behind the creation of the series’ newest villain, Granolah.
Dragon Ball Super’s newest villain, Vengeful Granolah, was created with the aim of giving the character a unique “Western” aesthetic.
Toyotarou detailed the character creation process in a new interview posted to the official Dragon Ball website. “I’m focusing on the fact that the character is a survivor,” said Toyotarou, “But [tác giả của Dragon Ball Akira] Toriyama reminded us that this is not a warrior race, right? But they love to fight… I really don’t know how to do it. “The Granolah are the last of the Cerealians, a race that was destroyed by the Saiyans before most of them were wiped out by Frieza. Toyotarou said, explaining Granolah’s unique glasses: “I had the goal of transforming the character into the character.” “And with that in mind, I can imagine that this is a race of sharpshooters, and so Granolah can have these glasses to lock on to the target, which has the potential to become a sniper.” looks great.” The artist also revealed that it was Toriyama’s idea to have the goggles talk to Granolah.
“Since this race went extinct 50 years ago, even though they were aliens, I wanted a bit of a vintage feel,” said Toyotarou while describing Granolah’s clothing design process. “I also wanted some steampunk elements. That’s how the clothes are designed… I wanted the race to have a nostalgic feel.”
Toyotarou also revealed that he had to redesign the Heeters four times before Toriyama finally approved their appearance. “After the third rejection, I felt like begging Toriyama to do it,” joked the artist.
Granolah is the latest villain to go head-to-head with Goku and Vegeta in the Dragon Ball Super manga. As stated earlier, the Granolah are the last of the Cerealians, a non-physical race of mighty Saiyans from which many of the series’ protagonists are descendants. However, Granolah manages to get stronger by using the Dragon Balls to gain great power, which the character is using to avenge the destruction of his people. Unfortunately, Granolah’s wish also had the side effect of reducing his remaining lifespan to just three years, forcing the lone warrior to expedite the search for the last remaining Saiyans.
Dragon Ball Super began serialization in Shueisha’s V Jump magazine in 2015 and is a direct sequel to the original Dragon Ball manga. The series is written by author Akira Toriyama, with art by Toyotarou. The manga inspired an anime series from 2015-2018. A new Dragon Ball Super movie, which will feature a brand new animation style, was revealed at Comic-Con 2021.
