Summary
The original Broly finally appears in the Dragon Ball manga via epic fanart, bringing the long-awaited showdown with Goku and Vegeta. The fanart showcases the classic Broly vs Saiyan heroes, fulfilling fans' desire to see an unofficial version of Broly from the Dragon Ball manga. Dragon Ball Super's reinvention of Broly as a hero is necessary for the plot, but this fanart allows fans to see the classic version in action.
While Super Dragon Ball eventually remedied this shortcoming with an updated depiction of the classic character, but the manga never gave readers just one thing. Dragon ball fans want to see: Goku and Vegeta vs Broly. Previously, Broly had never even been mentioned in the Dragon Ball manga, despite appearing in three movies that took place during the DBZ era. But now, the original image of Broly is finally getting the manga treatment in the form of epic new fanart.
In two X posts by user KAKERU (name: DBSKAKERU1), the artist shares two works of art that look as if they were drawn by Akira Toriyama himself – complete with the classic style of the original Dragon Ball manga.
The first image shows Goku and Vegeta, both in their Super Saiyan forms, standing against a smirking Broly – who is unleashing his full legendary Super Saiyan power – before Broly charges at the two heroes Saiyan. Goku has a worried look on his face in the last frame of the first image, while Broly keeps his sinister smile. The second image relieves Goku's worries, as the first shows Broly attacking Kakarot with a powerful punch, sending him crashing to the ground in the second, while also inspiring a shocked look on Vegeta's face. and horror in the third panel.
Dragon Ball Fanart finally brings the original Broly to the Manga
While unofficial, this fanart finally brings the original Broly into the Dragon Ball manga in a way that fans have been hoping to see long before the legendary Super Saiyan first appeared in Dragon Ball Super (as way is a completely different character). The original Broly, who debuted in the movie Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan, is officially considered 'non-canon' because the events of his storyline in the DBZ movie do not match the continuity of manga.
So, since he doesn't originate from the manga, Broly will definitely never be included in the manga, as his very existence directly contradicts the established Dragon Ball universe. Broly's unofficial DBZ status finally opened the door for the inclusion of an alternate version of the character from Dragon Ball Super (who was the main character), but old-school fans still crave The villain Broly was first introduced in the '90s – and clearly this fanart is for them.
Dragon Ball Super did the right job of recreating Broly
This Dragon Ball Z fanart is fun, but it's a good thing it's not canon!
While Dragon Ball fans may long for the days when Broly was a brutal villain who could easily defeat Goku and Vegeta (which is exactly how he is depicted in this fanart), it's good that Dragon Ball Super recreated this character when he finally made it into the manga. If DBS had simply asserted that Broly was canon instead of releasing Dragon Ball Super: Broly (and his subsequent manga), then Broly would have been a villain. The reimagining of the character allows him to become a Saiyan hero along with every other living Saiyan in the franchise.
Dragon Ball Super is currently building a Saiyan team to take down Black Frieza and that team includes Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Trunks, Goten and Broly. If Broly remained a villain then he couldn't be included in this team, which would rob fans of an epic team-up.
While Broly's Super Dragon Ball reimagining is good for the larger plot, it's understandable that fans would want to see the original version of the character brought to the page. And that's why this fanart is so epic, because it delivers Dragon ball fans get the chance to witness Goku and Vegeta battle Broly for the first time in the manga.
