The defending champion has shared about the Group Stage and the near future at Worlds 2022.
Throughout the history of the World Finals from 2011 to now, only one organization has successfully defended the title. And it’s not surprising that EDward Gaming wants to equal that achievement with T1 this year. EDG is going through the 2022 season with full of ups and downs. They started slowly and finished 7th in both the group stage and the play-off round of the LPL Spring 2022. However, with the inherent class, EDG quickly “revived” and reached the top 3 of the LPL Summer 2022 and had tickets to Worlds by winning the Regional Qualifiers.
Although they could not win the first place in Group A of the Group Stage of Worlds 2022, in general, EDG can still be satisfied with what they have done in New York. They are even doing very similar things in Iceland before reaching the top at Worlds 2021. Inven Global spoke with Flandre, EDG’s top laner, to discuss the team’s performance. Impressive teams, opponents and what they need to do to improve their results at Worlds 2022.
Your team has made it to the Knockout Round. Can you describe your performance throughout the Group Stage. What do you believe you need to improve the most?
Regarding our performance – with the exception of two games against T1 – the whole team performed well. But when we played against T1 for the first time… Zeus simply played better than me. Speaking of this aspect, I really need to practice more to improve further in the future.
Aside from the top lane situation, what are your thoughts on T1? Did they surprise you? What do you think you will need to do to perform better if you fight them again?
All T1 players have extremely high skill ceilings. Considering the tactical aspect, I have to say that they have too many real battle strategies in the game. We could feel it in both games because we both lost to T1 and the start of the game is always really tough. Both of those matches were not easy at all. So we really need to study, learn more about them in the future.
Like many other teams, EDG’s mid laner Scout has been plagued with health issues. From a personal perspective, why do you think you performed weaker in the times against T1?
The reason may lie in the laning phase. Sometimes, I may not be familiar with top lane matches. Typical examples are the champions I picked like Maokai and Ornn that made me unaccustomed to laning against certain opponents. So maybe in the future, I will have to play more top lane champions to increase my confidence.
Are you worried that the Group Stage results will affect the rest of Worlds 2022? What gives you confidence that EDG will find success at the Knockout Round?
Looks like if we had more time in the future to do a few tweaks and watch more matches and try to improve in scrims… For sure we would become as strong as a team. T1.
From what you’ve watched other teams play in the Group Stage, which opponent are you looking out for?
It feels like the teams in the other groups have a lot of players that I can really learn from. For example, Rogue has a skilled top laner Maokai. They play really well and I can really learn a lot from him (Odoamne). As for RNG, they showed us a lot of top laners so in this section I can learn from them. So there are definitely a lot of teams that – one way or another – have a lot of players that I can look up to.
Is there anything else about Rogue or Odoamne that has particularly impressed you?
Honestly, I’m learning how Rogue top plays Tanks in real combat because he’s such a master at those types of champions.
Thank you so much for taking the time to chat. Flandre, is there anything else you would like to say to EDG fans around the globe?
First, I want to say to all EDG fans and supporters: Thank you to all of you and hope you guys always cheer for EDG in the future. Lately, I believe we’re trying to make some adjustments to our health and fitness. I believe that after Scout recovers, the five of us will become one when competing on stage together. And for sure, we will do more research on our competitors. We will make some improvements in the future and try our best to give you the best performance.
EDG will fight DRX in Quarterfinals 4 at 04:00 on October 24. The winning team will advance to the Semi-Finals and face off against the team that moves on after Gen.G vs DWG KIA.
