Arknights developer Hypergryph has announced the next game in the series, Arknights: Endfield.
Over the years several video game franchises have made the leap from PC or console platforms to mobile. Call of Duty: Mobile has proven to be so popular that Activision recently announced that a mobile version of Call of Duty: Warzone is also in development. However, fewer and fewer companies are doing the opposite, moving mobile games to PC. MiHoYo accomplished this feat in 2020 by releasing Genshin Impact simultaneously on both console and PC and mobile platforms, and now developer Hypergryph is doing the same with Arknights: Endfield.
Arknights is a free mobile tower defense game with RPG elements, which was released on mobile devices in 2020 and became an instant hit. Even before its launch outside of China, Hypergryph had over a million pre-registrations for the game. Arknights is known for its addictive gameplay, detailed story, impressive graphics, and gacha mechanics.
On March 17, Hypergryph announced that Arknights would be a game franchise with a sequel called Arknights: Endfield in development. The new game will be a 3D RPG title that retains some of the strategy elements that fans loved in the first game. While Endfield will have the same “worldview” as Arknights, it will take place in a whole new world, introduce a new cast of characters, and have a unique new storyline. The game is currently in early development for both PC and mobile devices, and there is no word on an expected release date yet.
So far Hypergryph has shared some first images, a trailer and a demo gameplay video of Arknights: Endfield. The footage seen in the game is reminiscent of several locations in PlatinumGames’ Nier: Automata action role-playing game. The gameplay video also gives gamers a glimpse of the map’s interface, which also features futuristic tech features like Arknights’ interface. The trailer then shows the two characters running through various locations in a desert region where human structures appear to have long been abandoned, giving a rather fitting post-apocalyptic feel. fits the Arknights plot theme.
Arknights: Endfield takes place on a planet called Talos-II, and gamers will embark on a perilous journey to establish a new habitation on this world. Outside of the colonies, there are vast uninhabited lands that have never been explored and players will team up with a company called Endfield Industries to learn about the secrets of an abandoned world where used to support human life.
The game will feature new gameplay mechanics, although gamers will still control a group of characters that complete quests to unlock story chapters. Unlike the combat gameplay in Arknights, the battles in Endfield will be real-time action and gamers will face a variety of enemies and factions.
