The new story follows Eva pilots trying to find new sources of energy on a devastated Earth
Kodoani.com – Evangelion Beyond, theatrical play for the brand Neon Genesis Evangelion, revealed on Thursday that the stage play will tell an original story, set on Earth on the brink of ruin after a long period of unchecked development and conflict. The Evangelion units, controlled by 14-year-olds and operating under the supreme command of the special agency Mensch, are humanity’s last hope in finding a powerful new source of energy. The Evas struggle against the Ikimono, giant creatures that emerge from the underground.
Masataka Kubota, one of the play’s main actors, said in a comment that although the play changes its setting and characters, it maintains Evangelion’s themes of “divine, human, conflict, invasion, destruction and rebirth.”

The play will run from May 6 to May 28 at Tokyo’s Kabukicho Tower. The play will be the first theatrical production for the new performing arts venue of the Milano-za Theatre. The play will then run from June 3-4 at the Matsumoto Performing Arts Center in Nagano and from June 10-19 at the Morinomiya Piloti Hall in Osaka. Tokyu Business Group and its subsidiary Tokyu Recreation Co., Ltd. are producing plays. Promotions for Evangelion Kabukicho Impact, including the play, will begin April 28.
The building is located on the former site of Shinjuku Milano-za, a theater that screened the Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth recompile. Audience footage was famously used as part of the climactic scene in the following Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion film.
Belgian artist and theater director Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui will direct and choreograph the play. Seiji Nozoe is writing the script.
