Super Pilot Maverick (original title: Top Gun Maverick) returns to screens this summer once again exploring the unique world of fighter pilots. One of the things people wonder why every pilot has a callsign and what is the meaning behind those interesting names?
What is Callsign?
Nicknames in the aviation industry can be understood as the registration number of an aircraft, an airline or a military nickname of a pilot assigned to himself or to his teammates. In the case of Top Gun and the upcoming Top Gun Maverick, the pilots’ callsigns are understood in the final sense.
Every member of the US Navy Top Gun School of Fighters Weapons has a military nickname, some even with a long story behind the brief nickname. Names like “Maverick”, “Goose” and “Viper” became an important part of the film.
Not only is it a fun way to call friends by name, but it’s also a means for pilots and air traffic controllers to easily tell the difference.
Maverick
Pete “Maverick” Mitchell played by Tom Cruise is the main character of the two Top Gun seasons. The nickname “Maverick” (indie, lone) seemed born for the role. Throughout his life, Maverick lived instinctively and autonomously, calmly completing all missions recklessly.
Off-screen, Maverick is also a perfect nickname for Tom Cruise – who did his own stunts and didn’t care what other people thought of him. Unique and inspirational characters like Maverick created by Tom Cruise have helped Top Gun become an icon.
Iceman
Tom “Iceman” Kazansky (Val Kilmer) has a nickname “Iceman” that reflects the pilot’s flying style and personality. As Goose said to Maverick in the bar: “That’s the way he flies, ice cold, without a fault”. Iceman piloted the plane like a textbook, passing up opportunities and risks to fly exactly as he was taught. This nickname also suits Kazansky’s personality: almost always displaying an expressionless facade.
Goose
People often think that Maverick’s best friend Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) owns the nickname “idiot” thanks to his witty, somewhat goofy personality. However, according to the actor himself, the origin of the name Goose comes from a guy in real life who met an airplane. He mistakenly called the engine failure, so they broke the rest of the engine causing the plane to fall into the water. That’s the reason for the silly Goose name.
Rooster
Played by Miles Teller, Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw is the son of Goose – Maverick’s late best friend. In Top Gun Maverick, Rooster is a pilot undergoing training that will then be directly working with Maverick.
Rooster is a nickname that matches the character’s nickname, while showcasing Bradley’s youthfulness and potential. This will be a counterweight that makes Maverick’s heart heavy when thinking about his friend even though he has passed away for more than 30 years.
Pheonix
In Super Pilot Maverick, young actress Monica Barbaro plays Lieutenant Natasha Trace, alias Pheonix. The actress once humorously shared, but did not forget to emphasize that the character she took on was just as interesting as the fighter planes: “a talented and brave female pilot.”, like phoenix in the top.
Payback
The new cast of Super Pilot Maverick is called Reuben Fitch – nicknamed “Payback” played by Jay Ellis. “Payback is a smug guy who thinks he’s the best pilot in the navy and wants to be the best no matter what.” Ellis described.
True to the “tit-for-tat” nickname, this character’s personality is quite fierce commensurate with his talent. It sounds almost like Maverick when he first appeared in TOP GUN and then the actor’s smile, it was very contagious.
Coyote
Played by Greg Tarzan Davis, lieutenant Javy Machado, nicknamed “The Prairie Wolf” is an accomplished pilot. His nickname is inspired by his somewhat wild appearance and aggressive personality, fearless when sitting in the pilot’s cockpit. Machado promises to be one of the formidable faces of the new pilots in Maverick’s Super Pilot, which will surely go far under Maverick’s tutelage.
Super Pilot Maverick opens early screenings from 6pm on May 25 and all day on May 26, officially premiering on May 27, 2022.
