Fafner: Dead Aggressor Manga ends after 7 years

Tomomi Matsushita “complete version” of the Fafner franchise story launched in 2014

Tomomi Matsushita’s manga Sōkyū no Fafner – Dead Aggressor ended on Wednesday. The manga’s ninth and final volume will publish this fall or winter.

The manga launched in Kodansha’s Shonen Sirius magazine in September 2014, but moved to Kodansha’s Palcy and pixiv manga app in 2018. Kodansha published the manga’s eighth compiled book volume on February 9. The manga went on a one-year hiatus from October 2019 to October 2020.

The manga considers itself a “complete version”, not only adapting Fafner’s television anime, but also the novels, drama CDs, and plays of the franchise. Novel and anime writer Fafner Tow Ubukata supervised the manga, and XEBEC is credited as the original work.

Mikami Akitsu also drew a Fafner: Dead Aggressor manga, and MediaWorks published the series in two compiled volumes in 2005 and 2006. Digital Manga Publisher released the series in English in 2010, and it describes story description:

A small island of Tatsumiya, located off the coast of Japan, is quietly hidden and all seems peaceful and tranquil, until a surprise attack by the enemy – Festum. Kazuki; who knew he had to fly a Fafner to defeat Festum. Kazuki succeeded, but not long after the attack, it was revealed that the island was artificial. It then began moving around the ocean in an attempt to evade not only Festum, but also the rest of humanity. As a result of the constant attacks, many young people on the island had to be trained as Fafner pilots, but Kazuki was the most skilled and qualified. Can Tatsumiya’s youth continue to withstand these brutal attacks by Festum or will they be completely annihilated?

Funimation released the 2004 original anime Fafner and the 2010 film Sōkyū no Fafner: Dead Aggressor: Heaven and Earth. Crunchyroll streamed both halves of the Fafner EXODUS sequel series in various countries as they aired in 2015. A new anime project titled Sōkyū no Fafner THE BEYOND is ongoing with the first 12 episodes showing. in theaters in Japan. The first three episodes will premiere in theaters in May 2019, and the final three episodes will premiere in theaters on November 5.
