Toei Animation confirmed that One Piece: Red will be released in the United States, but details about the film remain disappointingly scarce.
Kodoani.com – Toei Animation has uploaded an English subtitled version of the upcoming film’s teaser video to its official YouTube channel. While the video mostly features the same content as the original Japanese trailer, the release date at the end has been changed from the Japanese release date of August 6, 2022 to “Coming Soon”. While the announcement did not provide a specific release date, it is the first official confirmation that there are at least plans to release the new film outside of Japan.

One Piece: Red will be the 15th theatrical film in the anime series. Production on the new film is being overseen by series author Eiichiro Oda, who revealed in a statement that the film was born out of a desire to add a new female character to the series. “I’m bored of drawing legendary characters from movies! I want to draw a new little female character! That’s the character I want to do right now! And that’s how it started,” Oda said. The new film is written by Tsutomu Kuroiwa, who previously wrote the scripts for One Piece Film: Gold and CG-animed Gantz 0, and will be directed by Code Geass director Goro Taniguchi.
The film will focus on the character of Red-Haired Shanks, the captain of the Red-Haired Pirates and one of the Four Emperors of the New World. Shanks was the one who inspired the series’ protagonist, Monkey D.Luffy, to start his life as a pirate, and he also gave the hero his iconic straw hat. The film’s teaser trailer also reveals that the previously mentioned female character is a singer.
One Piece was first sold in 1998 on the pages of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump. In the 24 years since, the story of the Straw Hat Pirates has become the best-selling manga series in history, with nearly half a billion copies sold worldwide. In 2021, the manga published both the 1000th chapter and the 100th compiled book volume. The anime adaptation, produced by Toei Animation and originally premiered in 1999, recently aired its 1000th episode. Both Oda and Shueisha hinted that the final story would come to an end soon, but there are multiple versions. One Piece is about to be released. Netflix and Tomorrow Pictures have begun production on a live-action adaptation of the series.
