CBR: How does it feel to voice a character in an anime like Fena, which has both Japanese and Western influences?
Ryota Suzuki: I feel that large-scale world building, going on an adventure to solve a mystery on a sunken ship, is amazing. And, in the midst of all that, being voiced by one of the samurai who served the Houtman family so long ago… makes me so excited every time I shoot.
What about Yukimaru surprised you when you voiced him?
Yukimaru is calm, composed, and doesn’t show much emotion, but when it comes to Fena, he’s so engrossed that he can’t see what’s going on around him. The contrast in his personality is unexpected and I think it’s sweet. I also like the innocence that makes his ears turn red with the simple touch of his hand.
Yukimaru seems to be a very lonely person. There are instances where we see him trying to keep his distance and there are times when he seems a bit lost. What was it like voicing a character like this in these vulnerable moments?
The need to limit the range of my voice and expressions made things more difficult at times, but I paid careful attention to things like his physical voice and weight. persuasion befitting a hero.
What is your favorite Fena scene or moment so far?
The scene where Shitan stops Yukimaru from chasing Fena and he opens up about his thoughts and feelings has stayed with me. This is the first scene where you can see Yukimaru’s heart. The moment when I realized that for 10 long years he regretted not being able to protect her, that he had been thinking about her all this time, made me very emotional.
