The attack caused gamers in North America, Europe and many other regions to be simultaneously disconnected from the game server.
Starting yesterday (May 6), many Final Fantasy XIV players have continuously encountered lag or disconnection when accessing the game. The cause of this is said to stem from a targeted DDoS attack targeting the game. In an update on the Final Fantasy XIV website, developer Square Enix also acknowledged this information: “We are currently experiencing technical difficulties due to a DDoS attack. […] We are investigating the attack and taking countermeasures. Further details will be released as the situation progresses.”
Players cannot log in to the game
Square Enix confirmed the issue started around 8pm last night, causing players to be disconnected from servers across North America, Europe and many other regions; At the same time, there are problems when logging back into the game and accessing data. Currently, Square Enix is still trying to fix the problem but has not said how long it will take to restore normal operations. The DDoS attack occurred just weeks after director Naoki Yoshida announced that the team was developing a graphical update for the Dawntrail expansion. Previously, when the Dawntrail trailer was released, many players complained that the characters' eyes looked lifeless. This graphics upgrade is expected to improve and overcome the above defects. Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail will launch on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC on July 2, players who pre-order can access this expansion early from June 28.
