In an interview with PCGamer magazine, Steam boss Gabe Newell said that the current concept of Metaverse is very vague and like an unrealistic thing at the moment.
“There are a lot of people who fantasize about getting rich quick with the Metaverse,” says Gabe Newell. “However most of the people who are talking about Metaverse have absolutely no idea what they are really talking about. Even many people seem to have never played an MMO (online game). They will have lines of thought. kind of: Oh, you’ll have a customizable avatar in the virtual universe; it’s cool, it looks like Final Fantasy 14… Many consider this a novelty, a technological breakthrough. However, they don’t know that the concept of virtual reality (VR) has been around for a decade. It’s nothing new. A trend suddenly blown up by someone (referring to Facebook). unexpectedly made many people misunderstand.”
Cyberpunk novels such as William Gibson’s Neuromancer or Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash are often cited as inspirations for the Metaverse. And now, technology tycoons, the “old people” in the field of marketing know how to blow up a trend that is still “in its infancy”. They know how to make a lot of people delusional and invest their entire fortune in things they don’t quite understand.
The Steam boss continued: “It’s clear that the gaming industry has been exploring these technologies for a long time. A lot of VR game projects have been, are and will continue to grow in the near future. It’s funny. when someone is late (refers to Facebook) but still tries to act like he’s enlightened and convinces people to spend their money, but you know, in the end, the customer and the core, useful technology will won, so I’m not too worried about that.”
So after Elon Musk, Gabe Newell is the next tech billionaire to speak out about Metaverse projects at the moment. The Steam boss thinks it will be a long, long time before humans can step foot into the Metaverse.
