According to the report, the US now has 164 million gamers accounting for 73% of the population, of which 13 to 64 years old play at least an hour a week, representing a larger, more diverse market than before.
Gamers’ interests are spread across multiple markets: console games, PC games, and mobile games. They are interested in new technology like VR and are investing in new services like cloud games. According to gamers surveyed by CTA, the majority of them play for fun or like to compete with other players or overcome challenges.
CTA surveyed 2,000 US gamers between the ages of 13-64 earlier this year for its findings. Each eligible respondent reported playing a game for at least one hour within the previous three months.
One finding from the published report is that player engagement has increased. Players are now averaging 24 hours weekly, up from 16 hours in 2019. However, if you look at the report, the numbers are fairly evenly distributed. About 25% of gamers (or 40.9 million people) are “professional gamers,” which means they play about 37 hours or more a week. Of which 41% (67.3 million) are “casual gamers” for an average of 13 hours. “Regular gamers,” who average 29 hours weekly, are at an average of 34% (55.6 million).
Mobile is the main gaming medium of choice followed by console and PC. The division of game types such as hardcore, midcore or casual is most easily seen in gaming habits, as both gamers like “action role-playing games”. Mobile gamers also enjoy playing Single Player games, as opposed to console and PC players.
A common theme shared by all gamers is that they appreciate the “playability” and ability to stream digital media on the device. Some surveys on types of gaming show that mobile gamers’ concerns about satisfaction with gaming devices are different. Mobile games today have a variety of devices and can meet the broad needs of players. Segmenting machines with different chips is something gamers consider when choosing.
