Nintendo revealed during the Nintendo Direct that the classic turn-based strategy title Front Mission will receive a remake for the Nintendo Switch.
During today’s Nintendo Direct, there were several announcements for upcoming titles. Developer Square Enix has revealed information about two installments in the Front Mission series of games coming to the Nintendo Switch. The Front Mission franchise was first released on PlayStation and Super Famicom in 1995. The franchise has continued in many forms, including manga, novels, games, and toys. Now, the developer has announced that the franchise will continue on the Nintendo Switch with two parts Front Mission.
During the Nintendo Direct, it was revealed that the full remake of the first game, Front Mission 1st, will be released on Nintendo’s Switch this summer. The sequel, Front Mission 2, will also launch on Nintendo Switch at a later date. This isn’t the only classic returning to the Switch, as Wii Sports is back as Nintendo Switch Sports. The Front Mission announcement comes with a trailer full of “mechs” that will get fans excited. It features several gameplay segments about 3D tactical battles between wanzers, and fans can also check out some customization options for the mech suits.
The Front Mission franchise is rooted in turn-based tactical role-playing and players use robots known as wanzers to wage war against other super-states. However, fans of the franchise do sometimes get the chance to test mech against each other, such as in Front Mission Evolved’s multiplayer battle. However, the remakes are moving to a turn-based format, which should work well on the Switch, especially when used in its handheld form. Front Mission games are also regularly praised for their storytelling elements, and this can bring players back for more playthroughs.
Front Mission 1st will release on Nintendo Switch in the summer of 2022.
The franchise will likely find a new player base, even though these games are remakes of the original titles. Front Mission 2 was released only in Japan, so it can now be enjoyed by a wider audience. Not to mention many Switch gamers may not remember the first Front Mission back in 1995, and will be experiencing the franchise for the first time. Switch gamers looking for a classic tactical RPG feel on their modern console will be pleased to hear that Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes is also announced for Switch.
While there isn’t much news about the second game, one could argue that the announcement of both Front Mission titles proves that Square Enix is committed to returning the franchise to the Switch. This could mean a number of things, as the Front Mission series has had several genre-changing spinoffs including a real-time strategy game, a third-person shooter called Front Mission, and more. Evolved and even an MMO. There could still be a lot going on in preparation for Front Mission on Switch.
