INTERNATIONAL_ Strategy, MMORPG and RPG were the highest-grossing game genres last year, according to the latest report.
Specifically, App Annie reports that user spending on mobile games will reach $116 billion globally by 2021. This represents a 15% year-over-year increase over 2020, according to the report. State of Mobile 2022 report.
The results also show that games represent the majority of consumer spending on mobile devices, with total spending reported at $170 billion across all apps last year.
In terms of games, Roblox, Genshin Impact, and Coin Master were the top-grossing titles in consumer spending for the year. Also, strategy, MMORPG, and RPG are the highest-grossing genres.
The report also provides some insight into the demographics of mobile gamers. In the US, France, and Japan, female gamers tend to play puzzle, match-3 games like Candy Crush Saga, while male gamers often play strategy games like Clash Royale in the US.
User spend still outperforms ad-generated money, with total spending in the sector at $295 billion across all apps. This represents a 23% increase year-over-year, showing growth despite Apple’s changes to privacy and IDFA tracking (Apple’s app policies). Ad spending is estimated to surpass $350 billion by 2022, according to the report.
