Everything goes well. All in all, with the combined efforts of all the exhibitors and ourselves, the event attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors and millions of people around the world eagerly watched Cologne.”
As noted, many visitors and exhibitors from abroad come to Cologne to honor quality game products and share their passion for gaming. Cologne this year is more international than ever. It was a clear signal to the world that Germany, the venue for the fair, had finally returned to the gaming industry.
The event kicked off with Opening Night Live, which included details on upcoming titles including Dead Island 2, Hogwarts Legacy and Return to Monkey Island. After that, the opening day took place with the participation of various media and industry representatives reflecting on the exhibition.
Gamescom is the video game event with the largest floor space and largest number of visitors on the planet. Organizers have fewer exhibitors, after major companies such as Electronic Arts, Sony, Nintendo and Activision Blizzard decided not to participate. This requires the organizational team to plan and adjust some details.
The event coincides with a near-annual call from representatives of German industry demanding that the government and politics take the games more seriously and invest more.
The importance and market share of video games has skyrocketed in recent years and decades. In 2021, the industry’s revenue outstrips Hollywood and the music industry combined. Games are also increasingly setting cultural trends rather than following them.
Instead of games based on movies, TV shows or books, often video games end up being popularized as other forms of entertainment perhaps most famously in the case of the following Polish novel This became the game and eventually became the hit Netflix series The Witcher.
