January 5 is a big moment for Ghibli fans as it is animator Hayao Miyazaki’s 81st birthday.
Perhaps for those who are fans of Studio Ghibli, it is certainly no stranger to the name Miyazaki anymore. Miyazaki Hayao (born January 5, 1941 in Tokyo, Japan) is an animator, manga artist, screenwriter, and co-founder of the animation studio Studio Ghibli.
Miyazaki is the author of many Japanese animation films (anime) and Japanese comics (manga) that have achieved great success both in terms of revenue and art, in which the film Sen and Chihiro in the mystical world won the Oscar. 75th for Best Animated Feature.
A feature of Miyazaki’s films is the frequent appearance of themes such as the relationship between man and nature and technology. The main characters in his works are often strong, independent girls or young women.
Miyazaki’s films are often commercially successful, and this has led to comparisons between him and the famous American animator Walt Disney. However, Miyazaki himself does not consider himself a “big man” in the field of animation, he just considers himself a lucky director when he can freely create films as he likes. He is also famous for his serious work ethic and burning passion for cinema.
And on the occasion of his 81st birthday, many fans around the world sent wishes to Miyazaki Hayao as well as expressed their excitement for his next works.
For those who don’t know, Miyazaki retired in 2013 to make a brand new movie. The project was officially announced in 2016 as How Do You Live?, this is a story based on a famous story in Japan about growing up. Studio Ghibli has been focusing its staff on this movie for several years now, and from the most recent revelations, How Do You Live? could be completed by 2023.
