Ghost in the Shell started out as a manga series created by Masamune Shirow. The franchise gained international attention in 1995 with the release of the animated film adaptation by director Mamoru Oshii. Since then, the series has been adapted into anime and other media multiple times. The cyberpunk series takes place in a near-future society where cybernetic innovations have become ubiquitous and the lines between man and machine are increasingly blurred. The story centers on Motoko Kusanagi, a cybernetic-enhanced agent of Japan’s cybercrime division.
The series was adapted into a live-action film by Paramount Pictures in 2017. Scarlett Johansson caused controversy when she was cast as Major Kusanagi, which sparked a new debate about Hollywood bleaching the roles and Asian character. Ultimately, the film was released to mixed reviews and performed poorly at the box office.
An international release for Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 – Sustainable has not been announced at this time.
