Gintoki fuels a lot of Gintama’s comedic moments, but this saint isn’t just a one-dimensional character.
Kodoani.com – Gintama (or Gin Tama) was originally written and illustrated by Hideaki Sorachi from 2003 to 2018. The manga was soon adapted into an anime and premiered in 2006. Sakata Gintoki is the main character. by Gintama. The guy is a ‘retired’ samurai in his late 20s who likes to spend his days relaxing.
Gintoki is a freelancer who founded Yorozuya, a place where clients can pay him to do odd jobs. This can range from trivial tasks like helping out with a haunted house to more important requests like protecting someone. The story follows Gintoki as he accepts two teenagers (Kagura and Shinpachi) under his wing, eventually becoming a relatively dysfunctional family.
Character
Sakata Gintoki is arguably one of the best protagonists of any anime series. He can be related in most ways (aside from his samurai skills) as Gintoki is quite lazy and frequently puts his fingers in his nose or ears at random times. In addition, Gintoki has gone bankrupt and is known to be behind in paying his monthly rent. However, despite his blatant laziness, Gintoki still tries his best to complete every job within his power. One of the best things about Gintoki is a completely well-rounded character that adapts to situations in a realistic way. For example, in comedy episodes, he is lazy and sarcastic. On the other hand, when a serious problem occurs, Gintoki is an excellent swordsman who is also exceptionally stubborn and always protects his friends and family.
Gintoki’s Early Life
Gintoki’s childhood is not revealed much. However, from what the story reveals about him, Gintoki spent his childhood wandering in search of food (and sometimes weapons to protect himself), eventually becoming known for The name of the Demon Eater. That was until Gintoki met Yoshida Shouyou, who eventually got him into his academy, Shoka Sonjuku, where he taught orphans about various subjects and the art of swordsmanship. This is where he meets others such as Takasugi Shinsuke and Katsura Kotarou.
The lack of a family in his early days influenced Gintoki’s future perception of having a family: it was perhaps the most important thing to him. In some cases, Gintoki is indifferent about his brotherly feelings for Shinpachi and Kagura.
However, as the series progresses, it becomes clear that they are two of the most important people in Gintoki’s life. Things took a turn for the worst during the Kansei purge when Naraku, a group of assassins hired by the Bakufu government, captured Yoshida Shouyou and burned Shoka Sonjuku. In the end, Gintoki, Takasugi, Katsura, and Sakamoto Tatsuma joined the Joui War, sparking a rebellion.
During this time, Gintoki was given the title ‘Shiroyasha’ (also known as the white demon) because of his hair, white clothes, and adept swordsmanship. Unfortunately, Gintoki, Takasugi and Katsura were eventually captured by Naraku, who forced Gintoki to choose between killing Shouyou and saving his friends or killing his friends and saving Shouyou. In the end, Gintoki decides to save his friends’ lives (as part of his promise to his mentor, Shouyou). However, Takasugi resented Gintoki for killing Shouyou, the protagonist in their lives who gave them hope and a family.
After the war Joui
After the Joui War, Gintoki and his friends parted ways, leaving only Gintoki alone again. At one point, Gintoki was captured and tortured for an unspecified amount of time. However, upon his release, Gintoki and his perception of the future changed slightly. Still wounded, Gintoki wandered for days in the frigid snow, nearly dying against a tombstone, until a woman came to the cemetery to visit her late husband. This woman is Otose, who eventually allowed Gintoki to rent the space above her shop, Otose Snack House. As time passed, Gintoki gave up his life as a samurai to pursue a more comfortable life, and eventually founded the ‘Old Yorozuya’. At its initial formation, the members of Yorozuya included Gintoki, Kanemaru, Ikesawa, and Furuhashi. However, things did not last long, and after the breakup, Gintoki was left alone for the third time. It wasn’t until he met Shinpachi and Kagura that he found hope and a family again.
While his story is important to his present and future, Gintama doesn’t often remind audiences of Gintoki’s tragic past. His plot doesn’t overshadow the current one, which works pretty well for the movie because it reflects a sense of realism. Gintoki remains one of the best protagonists in anime thanks to these realistic elements.
