Google is said to have shut down Everyday Robots, a subsidiary that makes robots for tasks like cleaning tables and making coffee, to cut costs.
According to Wired, Everyday Robots is a project under the “X program”, specializing in testing new technology ideas. Today, Everyday Robots produces more than 100 robots with simple tasks such as cleaning tables, dispensing drinks, sorting and recycling trash, serving at Google offices.
Everyday Robots’ mission is to create machines equipped with camera systems and machine learning that can perform many tasks on their own in a variety of environments. These machines can target, assess and manipulate through robotic arms. Users can give voice commands.
Everyday Robots has more than 200 employees. With the decision to close as part of Google’s cost-cutting plan, Everyday Robots will no longer be a separate project within Alphabet. Employees in this segment will either move on to other robotics projects or be laid off. The company will not create new robots and it is not clear how the remaining robots will be used.
A former employee of Everyday Robots said that the project’s shutdown is a pity because robots can do meaningful things and with the right investment, the company can create meaningful products in the market in the next 5 years. .
Previously, Google also asked cloud employees to share workspaces with colleagues to increase real estate efficiency and cut operating costs.
