WB Games Montréal has delivered a new Gotham Knights trailer at SDCC 2022, detailing Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl.
Gotham Knights developer WB Games Montréal gave fans a fresh look at the game’s version of Batgirl with a new trailer at San Diego Comic-Con 2022. The studio’s new Bat Family coop title This will release later this year and sees former Batman teammates and allies like Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin and Red Hood take on the Court of Owls and their claws in Gotham City.
Announced alongside Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League at DC’s FanDome event in 2020, Gotham Knights takes place separately from the Batman: Arkham games. The story’s premise sees the Bat Family facing the death of Batman and Commissioner Gordon, as they attempt to restore order to Gotham and confront enemies such as Mister Freeze and Penguin. Each of these four playable DC heroes will have their own unique abilities and moves, with Robin using the Justice League’s Watchtower base to teleport and the Red Hood in Gotham Knight having magical abilities – presumably due to his time in the Lazarus Pit, which resulted in him being resurrected after his death at the hands of the Joker. While 2021 has been a quiet year for Gotham Knights, WB Games Montréal has been steadily providing more footage of the game over the past few months, and now it looks like the title will release on October 25th.
The latest Gotham Knights trailer offers an in-depth look at Batgirl, aka Barbara Gordon. Uploaded to Warner Bros. YouTube channel. Games, the trailer has a similar structure to previous trailers on Nightwing, and former Robin – Red Hood reveals more about Batgirl’s personality and motivations as well as her skill set. While Tim Drake’s journey seems to be about how he will adapt as Robin without Batman, Barbara seems to focus on her evolving the iconic Batgirl into something powerful. as strong as the Dark Knight. Like the other Batman characters, Batgirl can combine hand-to-hand combat and stealth, using a stick (or high-tech baton) along with batarangs and grapnel guns. Unlike the Nightwing version of the game, who uses gliders to travel around the world in the game, Batgirl expands her cloak and glides like a Caped Crusader. The trailer also showcases some of the outfits she will have in the game, all with different capes and armor.
Previous Dark Knight videos have featured Court of Owls, but they don’t appear to appear in the new Batgirl trailer. However, the trailer focuses on new enemies, with Batgirl quelling what appears to be a prison riot or prison break attempt, only to fend off a boss. The prisoner holding the cane could be Sofia Falcone, a key character in Jeph Loeb and the late Tim Sale’s The Long Halloween. The next scene sees Batgirl in another changing wardrobe and in some sort of gladiator arena, where she comes face to face with enemies wearing pig masks and swinging a giant flaming chain. The most famous pig-themed Batman villain is Professor Pyg, but that doesn’t appear to be the enemy Barbara is fighting. If it’s Pyg somehow, that would just be further proof that Gotham Knights has a bit of a design problem.
While response to recent Gotham Knights trailers has been mixed, the new look at Batgirl provided at San Diego Comic-Con shows the game’s potential. WB Games Montréal’s title has a compelling premise, and each new reveal reveals a little more polish when it comes to storytelling and gameplay. It remains to be seen if it all comes together perfectly in October and there are certainly over-engineered aspects but there’s still a lot of promise to be expected from fans.
