Back in 2001, Piranha Bites released the Gothic fantasy RPG title. At the time of release, the game received positive reviews and sold enough copies to become a mature game franchise. The Gothic franchise later released two direct sequels and three spin-off games throughout the 2000s through the early 2010s, but this IP was completely discontinued in 2011. Now it looks like THQ Nordic is preparing to bring the game franchise back in a big way.
The first Gothic game has a rather unique setting compared to other fantasy RPGs. In the world, a kingdom of humans was weak in a war against the Orcs, and the only chance they had was magic ore that had to be mined from the mines. To mine this ore, the kingdom takes all its prisoners and sends them to extremely dangerous mines, supervised by powerful sorcerers. The main storyline of the first Gothic involves the player trying to survive and eventually escape one of these mines. While the game itself isn’t as popular as other fantasy series like The Elder Scrolls, Gothic was well known for its advanced AI at the time of its release.
In late 2019, THQ Nordic released a playable demo of a planned Gothic Remake. The reception to the demo was very positive and prompted the company to move the game into full development. Earlier today, the company released a complete trailer for the upcoming remake, which sadly doesn’t tell gamers much about the game itself. The bulk of the trailer is a shot that takes viewers through familiar mines and shows various characters enduring harsh and brutal conditions. At the end of the trailer, some prisoners are in the deeper and more remote areas of the mine, when they are attacked by a huge swarm of spiders.
The Gothic Remake trailer is one of a number of new things that THQ Nordic revealed during their event yesterday. The event included a new gameplay trailer for Destroy All Humans! 2: Reprobed and a new SpongeBob SquarePants title called SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake, among many others. Sadly a release date for Gothic Remake was not mentioned in the rollout.
After seeing the community’s positive reception of the demo, THQ Nordic founded a new studio called Alkimia Interactive, created specifically to work on Gothic Remake. At the same time, the company released a set of screenshots of the game to give gamers a better idea of what to expect from the upcoming remake.
