According to Square Enix’s quarterly report, Guardians of the Galaxy has underperformed in terms of sales.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is an unexpected hit for many gamers in 2021, it’s a single-player adventure game that focuses heavily on the story and follows Peter Quill and his famous friends. The game received critical acclaim upon launch and even won the best story award at The Game Awards 2021. For many people the game is the dark horse of 2021, because no one thought it was. that it will be so warmly received.
After the controversial and criticized launch of Marvel’s Avengers, few expected that Eidos Montreal and Square Enix would be able to completely turn the game around the following year to launch a truly successful Marvel title. In the months following its release, Guardians of the Galaxy has been deemed a success with most reviews currently being “extremely positive” on Steam. However, it seems that even Square Enix didn’t expect the game to be as successful as it did, and despite critical acclaim, Guardians of the Galaxy may have failed in another respect.
According to a recent quarterly earnings report, Guardians of the Galaxy publisher Square Enix claimed that the game underperformed in its launch sales. The company wrote in its report that “the game’s sales at launch did not meet our initial expectations.” However, sales have increased since November 2021, possibly because the community has taken notice of the critical acclaim Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has received.
Square Enix is expecting this sales growth to continue through 2022 to hit their target. It’s no surprise that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is still selling well even now, as Marvel’s games have proven to have a pretty long lifespan. In places where single-player titles are of particular interest, games like Marvel’s Spider-Man still have a strong fanbase even though the game has been out since 2018. After Marvel’s Avengers was shut down. After fierce criticism, Square Enix lost a significant amount of money, so it’s likely that Guardians of the Galaxy’s strong sales will make up for that.
Given the skepticism surrounding the launch of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s impressive to see how the game has grown in popularity and come this far. Whether its sales will continue to drive Square Enix’s earnings remains to be seen, but plenty of fans already have their eyes on the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy projects and even even learn about the past works of this famous squadron thanks to the game.
