Guerrilla Games’ Decima engine, used in Horizon Forbidden West, is being used to create other major Sony titles in the future.
The Decima engine was used to create Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequel Horizon Forbidden West, which will also be used for some upcoming PS5 production. In addition to being praised for its exciting open world and rich content, Horizon has also been hailed by critics and fans alike as one of the most beautiful titles ever released. When Horizon Forbidden West launched and was reviewed by many, it was considered by many to be a beautiful game, showing just how powerful the Decima engine is.
The Decima engine, which can generate entire worlds in the game, was first used by Horizon developer Guerrilla Games Forbidden West when the studio was working on the return of Killzone: Shadow Fall in 2013. Later upon the release of that game, they were informed that Horizon Zero Dawn would be built with the same engine. An updated version of Decima was then used to develop Horizon Forbidden West. Although Decima is primarily used by Guerrilla, the studio does not hold exclusive rights to the engine, as introduced recently.
In a Famitsu interview with PlayStation Studios, Head Hermen Hulst revealed that the Decima engine will be used by “several studios”. Hulst didn’t find out exactly which studios will be using Decima to develop the game, but from a recently leaked document listing upcoming Sony titles, fans have an idea of a few releases. operating can use this engine.
First, there’s the 2019 Death Stranding sequel, which is supposed to use Decima. This may not surprise gamers, as in 2016 it was revealed that Hideo Kojima’s original Death Stranding was being built with Decima in mind. Another game set to use Decima is Firesprite’s Horizon: Call of the Mountain, exclusive to PS VR2. Again, this may not come as a surprise to many as Call of the Mountain is part of the Horizon series. However, considering Hulst’s information about “sharing technology”, this could mean that many other studios will also use Decima in the future.
Gamers may soon see an updated version of the Decima engine if rumors are true about the upcoming Horizon Zero Dawn remake for PS5. Like The Last of Us: Part 1, the idea of a remake of Horizon Zero Dawn has been quite controversial in the gaming community, as many consider this to be an unnecessary game.
