Offering a small-town vibe in both anime and manga form, Non Non Biyori is the perfect iyashikei series to relax in.
Kodoani.com – As much as anime is known for its top-notch and engaging action concepts, there are also plenty of lighthearted stories that are easy to relax. Many of these make up the iyashikei genre, and these titles tend to peacefully take on the Slice of life premise. While sometimes more on the comedic side, these anime are ultimately very easy to sit back and watch – almost the anime equivalent of gathering around a campfire.
One of these iyashikei anime is Non Non Biyori, this is actually a sequel to its creator’s previous works. Set in a small town with a smaller school, this series is summed up in one word: pure. With the subgenre of iyashikei growing in popularity, here’s why Non Non Biyori is a prime example of the genre, what it’s about and where to enjoy it.
The plot of Non-Biyori
Non Non Biyori Set in Asahigaoka, is the epitome of a country town. Lacking many modern amenities, including basic shops nearby, the town’s school reflects this by accepting a number of students in different grades. One of them is the main character Hotaru Ichijo, a girl who, despite her height, is in fifth grade. Moving to a small town due to her father’s job, she becomes close with the other students, most of whom are of different grades and age groups.
Initially out of her element, Hotaru learns to love her new home while giving a fresh look to her classmates. The setting of the Asahigaoka series is also the same location introduced in Toko-toko & Yume no Yume, a previous work by creator Atto. The stories in the manga and anime are quite simple and lacking in plot, but this only adds to the peaceful feeling of watching it.
Where can I read Non Non Biyori manga?
The original Non Non Biyori manga ran for exactly 11 years, resulting in 16 volumes of the manga being almost localized into English by Seven Seas Entertainment. A side story short titled Non Non Biyori: Remember also ran for a year and was compiled into a single volume. This volume was released in Japan in March, so its final English release won’t fall too far behind.
