The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is out May 12 on Nintendo Switch.
There are hints throughout the new The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom trailer about how much time may have passed between the game and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. One of the easiest ways to find and evaluate this is to look at Link’s friends as they appear in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Riju, Tulin, and Sidon all appear in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Riju is the Chief of Gerudo, although still only a child since her mother has passed away without any other heir. Tulin is a Rito child, sent flying by his father in hopes of him becoming a warrior, although his mother considers him to be still too young to do so. Sidon is a prince, the son of King Dorephan of Zora. He had grown up when Link met him, and together they fought the Beast Vah Ruta. Throughout Link’s adventures, he meets all three and forms a strong bond with them. They are now back to supporting Link in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, after he helped their people in the previous game.
It seems, at least a couple of years have passed between the two games and the most noticeable thing is when looking at Riju and Tulin. Riju seems to have cut her hair, that’s definitely a difference, but moreover, she seems taller than before. Considering Tulin wasn’t considered ready to be a warrior in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the fact that he is now flying with Link into battle, taking on his father’s Champion role seems to be a bit of a stretch. great change and shows that he has aged. Tulin is also different in appearance, also appears to be taller and ties her hair in a ponytail with feathers. The change in Prince Sidon is the most subtle but also hints at a significant development. In earlier shots in the trailer, Sidon still wears the necklace he did in Breath of the Wild, but in a later shot, he appears with the tiara his father has. This suggests a very real possibility that the player will witness the death of King Dorephan in Tears of the Kingdom.
Apparently the land itself had changed as well. There are islands in the sky throughout the scene, but it’s hard to tell if this could be a natural phenomenon or something that happened as a result of Ganondorf’s intervention. But what is evident is that all three of Link’s friends are now mature enough to fight and protect Hyrule along with Link.
The trailer once again does a great job of upping the number of pre-orders and leaving fans worried about the fate of the game’s characters. But until players can get their hands on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, they won’t know how the entire world scale has changed.
