Leo tries to maintain his composure when facing Echidona in Episode 4, but his otherworldly knowledge may hint more at his past.
Kodoani.com – The following contains spoilers for Episode 4 of I’m Quitting Heroing.
One of the biggest concerns for any new employee impressing their new boss. Imagine the difficulty of doing so when that employee is a retired Hero and the owner in question is his old nemesis, the Demon Queen. This is the situation that Leo faces in Episode 4 of I’m Quitting Heroing when he was called to meet Echidona, under the alias of Black Knight Onyx.
However, the most intriguing things of this week come not from their impromptu encounter, but rather the suggestion that Leo may have originally come from an entirely different society.
Episode 4 opens with Leo encountering a nightmare in which a stern soldier with a face exactly like his own demons is killing demons in the urban cityscape. The setting is unfamiliar, but discerning viewers will recognize this warrior from the very first scene of the series. Following this dream, Leo heard from Shutina that Echidona wanted to meet him after hearing about his achievements for their army as the Black Knight Onyx.
While Echidona longs for a relaxing time learning about the new addition to her force, Leo is deeply annoyed when he has to try to hide his true identity during the party. Past the soirée, Echidona took off Leo’s helmet, trying to look him directly in the face. Leo used a well-timed transformation spell to change his appearance before being revealed, surprising him as a warrior from his previous dream.
While this may have been a subconscious slide based on an image still fresh in his mind, a deeper reading might imply that Leo and this man are one and the same. Of course, such a fact means that not only once did Leo take on a different look, but that Leo lived somewhere like modern-day earth with completely different technology. In other words, Leo can be the subject of an isekai process or through space.
This theory will play a lot of the role of Leo’s personality. In the past, Leo’s great abilities were attributed to the Hero role, but they can be easily explained by Leo being a strong isekai protagonist. Leo’s professional strategies also bear similarities to Japanese corporate culture, as demonstrated by Leo’s understanding of business hierarchy and rules during a drinking party with Echidna. While it is natural for such biases to influence anime character descriptions, combining them with other information makes an interesting case for an isekai plot.
However, Volume 4 also provides a critical world, leading to another possible conclusion. These include the fact that Renais’ prosperity was brought about by a relic known as the Sorcerer’s Stone. Echidna confides in Leo that the goal of her invasion is to use things to help the Demon World, a kingdom that is experiencing tribal wars instigated by disease and famine. The Stone itself is set in a hazy future facility, in a crumbling tower high above the citizens of Renais.
The stone, found 3,000 years ago by the First King of Renais, grants vegetation, health, and even immortality. Leo said that most of these rumors were exaggerated but didn’t clarify which one, before informing the audience that he had used another Sorcerer’s Stone himself.
The skyscraper-like ruins, the nature of a parallel Ghost World, and the wonder of the Sorcerer’s Stone may suggest that Leo’s dream simply took place in a bygone era of the world. he’s always alive, making the fictional setting a disguised background-apocalypse.
All drama aside, Echidna and Leo see significant character development in Episode 4. Echidona’s kindness to her people is explained, though it’s complicated by the fact that she He is willing to steal Renais’ welfare to help them. In turn, Leo proves himself to be a man of principle, deciding to reveal his true identity when he hears that her cause is something he can trust.
Before he could do so, however, the pair were interrupted by Shutina and Lily, who arrived with dire news. Both Edvard the Dragon General and Mernes the Shadowless General have gone missing. According to the letters left by the two, the latter went on a journey to find himself, while the former took his own life for improperly training his troops.
As such, it looks like the next few episodes will return to the Leo formula learning more about one of the champions in each outing. This most likely means that his development with Echidona will be halted for a while. Likewise, audiences may have to wait to discover the truth behind Leo’s past and the world or time he came from. However, if the tantalizing clues provided so far have not continued, those themes are sure to return in the near future.
