The widely used Unity engine is made possible by Unity Technologies, the leader in independent and mobile game development today.
According to reports, Unity 6 launches in 2024, featuring AI tools and more multiplayer tech visuals. In 2022, 70% of the top 1,000 mobile games will be made in Unity, as will more than 60% of all AR and VR content. The tool maker is even more successful, saying that 50% of games on devices use their technology. Unity games are available in 195 countries.
Unity Editor boasts about 1.3 million monthly active users as of March 2023, the company claims. Last year, Unity also said that an average of 3,300 new projects were started every day. Apps using this engine support more than 17 platforms from iOS to PS5 to Microsoft HoloLens or the less visible Android TV, which was downloaded more than 4 billion times per month throughout 2022.
Runtime, Unity’s real-time development platform, enables content creation in 2D and 3D, as well as AR and VR content. The company says it is operating on more than 4 billion devices as of March 2023. Unity pushes AI tools to become ubiquitous, especially for small-scale projects. Individuals creating commercial games are free to use as long as they have not earned more than $100,000 in revenue or the amount raised in 12 months is less than $200,000.
Personal use of the tool saw a drastic change, along with all Unity licenses earlier this year. Unity initially announced it would charge for each game install created from Unity. This was strongly opposed with more than 500 developers turning off ads and monetization, and trade bodies criticized the new policy coming from Unity.
Meanwhile, the Enterprise license, aimed at large companies, is a license that grants access to most tools, but will require contacting Unity directly for a quote. Unity Industry is primarily aimed at developers outside of gaming, such as automotive. Unity Pro version starts at $150/month and has no revenue or funding limits. This release provides access to additional support and customer service, as well as options to access the source code. That’s the ability to use Unity Cloud.
From the 2024 version of Unity onwards, Unity Pro and Enterprise users whose games earn more than $1 million in a 12-month period and reach 1 million downloads will be subject to a fee equal to 2.5% of revenue or the amount is calculated based on the number of new people joining the game each month. This will be based on self-reported numbers that developers can calculate using Unity’s engineering system.
Unity also recently announced that it is reintroducing the numbering system with Unity 2023 LTS being renamed Unity 6 ahead of its launch next year. Unity 6 will also expand its suite of AI tools and services to enhance operations. With the above, this is the most commonly used tool today in both games and non-games.
